Ah! Some individuals are subtle in their actions but not honest in their hearts. Some are subtle in their hearts but not honest in their actions. Some are subtle in both heart and action. Some are neither subtle in heart nor honest in action. How should one discern the first two types among these? As the Blessed One said, even if one stays with these two types of people, one cannot understand them. The Blessed One said: "Good, good! Son of good family, just like the fruit of a mango, these two types of people are indeed difficult to understand. Because it is so difficult to understand, I have said that one should stay together with them according to the Sutras. If one cannot understand even by staying together, then one should associate with them for a long time. If one cannot understand even by associating for a long time, then one should examine them with wisdom. If one cannot understand even with wisdom, then one should examine them thoroughly. By examining them thoroughly, one will be able to understand who upholds the precepts and who breaks them. Son of good family, staying together, associating for a long time, examining with wisdom, and examining thoroughly—if one possesses these four qualities, one will be able to understand who upholds the precepts and who breaks them. Son of good family, there are two types of precepts, and there are also two types of keeping them. What are they? Perfect precepts and imperfect precepts. Because there are those who keep precepts through causes and conditions, wise and intelligent people will observe that those who keep precepts for the sake of gain and fame regard it as perfect precept-keeping. Son of good family, the precepts of the Tathagata are without causes and conditions, therefore they are called perfect precepts. Therefore, even if Bodhisattvas are harmed and injured by evil-minded beings, they do not give rise to a mind that is obstructed by hatred. Therefore, the Tathagata is said to possess perfect precept-keeping. Son of good family, once in the past, I was staying with Shariputra and five hundred attendants in a city called Campa in the central region of Gyur Chang (Kushinagar, around 6th century BCE, now Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India), when a hawk chased a pigeon. The pigeon was terrified and hid in the shadow of Shariputra, but it still trembled like a tree by the water. When it came into my shadow, its body and mind became comfortable, and it became free from fear.
