It is called the nature of earth. The tenth-ground Bodhisattva is not called all-knowing, so although he sees, he is not clear. Son of a noble family, there are two kinds of seeing: seeing with the eyes and seeing with hearing. The Buddha, the Blessed One, sees the Buddha's nature with his wisdom eye, like seeing an amra fruit in the palm of his hand. The tenth-ground Bodhisattva does not see clearly because he sees the Buddha's nature by hearing. The tenth-ground Bodhisattva knows that he will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment without consuming poison, but he does not know that all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature. Son of a noble family, seeing with the eyes means that the Buddha, the Blessed One, and the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas see the Buddha's nature. Furthermore, seeing with hearing means that all sentient beings and those below the ninth ground see the Buddha's nature. If a Bodhisattva hears that all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature but does not generate faith, it is not called seeing with hearing. Son of a noble family, if any son or daughter of a noble family wishes to see the Tathagata, they should uphold the twelve categories of scriptures, hold, read, recite, write, explain, teach, and cultivate them extensively. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Simhanada asked: Blessed One, if all sentient beings do not seek the characteristics of the Tathagata's mind, how can they seek it by examining it? The Blessed One said: Son of a noble family, if all sentient beings do not truly know the characteristics of the Tathagata's mind, if they wish to understand and know it, they can know it through two causes and conditions. What are the two? Seeing with the eyes and seeing with hearing. Among them, seeing all the activities of the Tathagata's body is the Tathagata, which is called seeing with the eyes. If one understands the activities of the Tathagata's speech, one should know that it is the Tathagata, which is called seeing with hearing. If one sees that its form and shape are not equal to all sentient beings, it is the Tathagata.

It should be known that it is the departed one, that is seen with the eyes. Whatever is heard, the supreme and sacred sound that is different from the sounds of sentient beings, it should be known that it is the Thus-Gone One, that is seen with hearing. Observing the miracles performed by the Thus-Gone One, are they done for the sake of sentient beings, or for the sake of gain and fame? Seeing that he does it for the sake of sentient beings, not for the sake of gain and fame, it should be known that it is the Thus-Gone One, that is seen with the eyes. When the Thus-Gone One considers sentient beings with the wisdom of knowing the minds of others, observing whether he teaches the Dharma for the sake of gain and fame, or teaches the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings? Seeing that he does it for the sake of sentient beings, not for the sake of gain and fame, it should be known that it is the Thus-Gone One, that is seen with hearing. How did the Thus-Gone One obtain this body? Why did he take this body? Knowing for whom he took this body, that is seen with the eyes. How does the Thus-Gone One teach the Dharma? Why does he teach the Dharma? Knowing for whom he teaches the Dharma, that is seen with hearing. Even if he is tormented by the non-virtuous deeds of the body, he does not get angry, it should be known that it is the Thus-Gone One, that is seen with the eyes. Even if he is tormented by the non-virtuous deeds of speech, he does not get angry, it should be known that it is the Thus-Gone One, that is seen with hearing. When the Bodhisattva was first born, he took seven steps in each of the ten directions, and the Yaksha kings named Mani-bhadra and Purna-bhadra held umbrellas and banners to make offerings, urging countless and boundless world realms, filling the empty sky with golden, shining light, and the Naga kings Nanda and Upananda cooled the Bodhisattva's body with miraculous power, and the forms of the world's gods came to greet and prostrate, and the sage Asita folded his palms in respect, abandoning the desire for youth like spitting out phlegm, not being deceived by the joys of the world, going forth from home to homelessness to the very end.
