I have various kinds of wealth! The merit obtained from that cannot be compared to even one-sixteenth of the merit of cultivating loving-kindness. Son of noble family, cultivating loving-kindness is not false, but truly and correctly true. The loving-kindness of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is called false. The loving-kindness of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is true, neither false nor obscured. If you ask why, son of noble family, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides in the great Nirvana of complete pacification sees earth as gold and gold as earth. He sees earth as water and water as earth. He sees water as fire and fire as water. He sees earth as wind and wind as earth. Because of the accomplishment of wish-fulfilling, there is no falsehood. He also sees sentient beings as non-sentient beings, and non-sentient beings as truly sentient beings. Because of the accomplishment of wish-fulfilling, there is no falsehood. Son of noble family, therefore, the thought of a Bodhisattva with the four immeasurable minds is correct. Furthermore, son of noble family, what is correct thought for him? It is for the sake of completely eliminating all afflictions. Son of noble family, by cultivating the mind of loving-kindness, one will completely abandon desire. By cultivating the mind of compassion, one will completely abandon hatred. By cultivating the mind of joy, one will completely abandon unhappiness. By cultivating the mind of equanimity, one will completely abandon desire, hatred, and the perception of sentient beings. Therefore, it is called correct thought. Furthermore, son of noble family, the four immeasurable minds of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva are the basis of all roots of virtue. Son of noble family, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not see poor and miserable sentient beings, there is no cause for the arising of loving-kindness. If loving-kindness does not arise, the thought of giving alms will not arise. Because of the act of giving alms, many sentient beings will become happy, like this: food, drink, vehicles, clothing, incense, flowers, sitting and lying beds, houses, and illuminating lamps, and so on, are all alms. When alms are given in this way, his mind is not bound, and there is no attachment.

arising, not being eaten by demons, and dedicating it to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. At that time, the mind does not cling to anything, cuts off conceptualizations, is not afraid of gain and fame, does not seek the happiness of gods and humans, does not generate arrogance, does not expect reward, giving alms to deceive others is not almsgiving, not for the sake of craving enjoyment, when giving alms, does not look at the recipient. One who keeps the precepts and one who breaks the precepts, a field of merit and a non-field of merit, a spiritual friend and a non-spiritual friend, are not looked at. When giving alms, one does not look at the vessel and the non-vessel. One does not look at the sun and the time and place, and the non-place. One does not look at famine and times of great happiness. One does not look at cause and effect. One does not look at sentient beings and non-sentient beings, and merit and non-merit. In this way, one does not look at the giver, the receiver, and the object of wealth, until the interruption and the maturation of the fruit, but always practices giving alms, without interruption. Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva looks at those who keep the precepts and those who break the precepts, and between the maturation of the fruit, then it will not become almsgiving. If alms are not given, the perfection of generosity will not be completed. If the perfection of generosity is not completed, unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment will not be achieved. Son of good family, for example, if a person is struck by a poisoned arrow, that person's relatives and friends, in order to eliminate his poison and make him happy, then seek a skilled doctor to remove the poisoned arrow, but that person says this: "Wait a moment, do not touch my body. I must observe from which direction this poisoned arrow came, who shot it? Was it a Kshatriya caste? Was it a Brahmin? Or was it shot by a low caste? I must investigate from where it came. Also, is the arrow itself made of wood? Is it made of bamboo? Or is it made of willow? Who sharpened the arrowhead? Is it sharp iron? Is it soft iron? What kind of bird's feather is the arrow feather? Is it the feather of a vulture? Or the feather of a hawk? Where did the poison itself come from, who made it? Is it naturally formed? Or is it man-made poison?"
