Has not obtained mastery? Or even if obtained, is it uncertain? Or even if obtained, will it be lost again? If any immeasurable becomes master, but is not an object, what does that mean? For example, aiming to bring happiness to parents, siblings, and relatives, but not aiming at the immeasurable. If any immeasurable is both an object and has mastery over the object, what does that mean? That is the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If any immeasurable is neither an object nor has mastery, what does that mean? Like the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, although they broadly aim at immeasurable beings, they cannot do it, nor do they have mastery. Son of good family, therefore, the immeasurable is of four types, which are not knowable by Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but are the realm of activity of the Buddha, the Blessed One. Son of good family, thus, these four things, even though called immeasurable for Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, cannot be spoken of. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are called immeasurable and boundless. The Bodhisattva Light-Protected also asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, it is so. It is so. As the Blessed One said, it is the realm of activity of the Buddha, the Blessed One, and not the endurance of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Blessed One, is it possible that a Bodhisattva who dwells in the complete Nirvana of the Great Vehicle, from the mind of loving-kindness and compassion, does not become the mind of great loving-kindness and great compassion? The Blessed One replied: It is possible. Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva divides beings into three types: friends, enemies, and neutral, and further divides friends into three: superior, middling, and inferior, and similarly divides enemies into three, then the Bodhisattva, the great being, gives the best happiness to the superior who becomes a friend, gives equal happiness to the middling and inferior friends, gives a little happiness to the superior enemy, gives middling happiness to the middling enemy, and gives the best happiness to the inferior enemy, such a Bodhisattva

To the most intense enemies, give only moderate comfort. Do you diligently give equal supreme bliss to the moderate and inferior enemies? Do you diligently give equal supreme bliss to the superior, moderate, and inferior enemies? If you diligently give supreme bliss to the most intense enemies, that is called having a loving heart. At that time, the Bodhisattva has no distinction between parents and the most intense enemies, and the mind is equal. That son of good family is called love, but not great love. Question: World Honored One, for what reason is it that a Bodhisattva with such love is not called great love? The Buddha replied: Son of good family, because it is very difficult to fully possess, it is not called great love. Why is that? Because from a long time ago until countless eons, many defilements have been accumulated, and virtuous dharmas have not been cultivated. Therefore, the mind will not be tamed in a day or a night. Son of good family, just as a dry bean cannot be pierced by a needle, so too defilements are very hard. Even if the mind is focused and undistracted for a day and a night, it is still very difficult to tame. Furthermore, for example, dogs are not afraid of people, but deer and other animals are afraid of people and run away as soon as they see them. Anger, which is very difficult to abandon, is like a guard dog. The mind of love, which is very easy to deteriorate, is like a deer. Therefore, the mind is very difficult to tame, so it is not called great love. Son of good family, furthermore, for example, if you draw a picture on a stone, it will always be there. If you draw a picture on water, it will immediately disappear and not remain. Anger is like drawing a picture on a stone. The root of virtue is like drawing a picture on water. Therefore, this mind is very difficult to tame. Furthermore, for example, the light of a great fire lasts for a long time. The light of lightning is only momentary and does not last. Anger is like a fire. Love is like the light of lightning. Therefore, this mind is very difficult to tame. For that reason, it is not called great love. Good.
