When the great hero abides in the Great Vehicle Nirvana Sutra, it is called abiding in the seven virtuous dharmas. If a Bodhisattva possesses these seven dharmas, it is called pure conduct. Son of good family, another thing called pure conduct is: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Light Protector then asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, by cultivating loving-kindness extensively, there will be no hatred; with a compassionate mind, hatred can also be cut off. Why is it said to be the four immeasurables? If combined with meaning, there are only three. Blessed One, loving-kindness has three objects: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on dharma, and non-focusing. Compassion, joy, and equanimity are also the same. If combined with meaning, there are only three, not four. Focusing on sentient beings is to focus on the five aggregates and desire happiness, this is called focusing on sentient beings. Focusing on dharma is to focus on sentient beings and give what is needed, this is called focusing on dharma. Non-focusing is to focus on the Tathagata, called non-focusing. What is called loving-kindness is focusing on impoverished sentient beings. The Tathagata, the great teacher, is completely free from poverty and is extremely happy. If focusing on sentient beings, it is not focusing on the Buddha, and the dharma is the same. Therefore, focusing on the Tathagata is called non-focusing. Blessed One, the object of loving-kindness is all sentient beings, like focusing on parents, wife, children, or relatives and friends, therefore it is called focusing on sentient beings. Focusing on dharma is not regarding them as parents, wife, children, or relatives and friends, but observing that all dharmas arise dependently on conditions, this is called focusing on dharma. Non-focusing is not abiding in the characteristic of dharma, not abiding in the characteristic of sentient beings, this is called non-focusing. Compassion, joy, and equanimity are also the same. Therefore, there are only three, not four. Blessed One, regarding a person, there are

There are two: practicing with seeing and practicing with joy. Practicing with seeing is mostly meditating on love and compassion. Practicing with joy is mostly meditating on joy and equanimity. Therefore, there is no four in three. Bhagavan, what is called immeasurable is infinite. Because it is infinite and immeasurable, it is called immeasurable. If it is immeasurable, then there is no four in one. If there are four, then it should not be called immeasurable. Therefore, there is no four in one. The Bhagavan said to Light Protector: Son of good family, the Buddha Bhagavan speaks the Dharma for the sake of many ordinary beings, and it is spoken after very careful consideration, so it is difficult to understand and know. For some sentient beings, dependent origination is said to be one. What is dependent origination as one? It is all conditioned dharmas. Son of good family, in some cases, it is said to be two, namely cause and effect. In some cases, it is said to be three, namely afflictions, karma, and suffering. In some cases, it is said to be four, namely ignorance, action, birth, and old age and death. In some cases, it is said to be five, namely feeling, craving, grasping, existence, and birth. In some cases, it is said to be six, namely the cause and effect of the three times. In some cases, it is said to be seven, namely consciousness, name, form, the six sense bases, contact, feeling, existence, and grasping. In some cases, it is said to be eight, namely the remaining eight excluding ignorance, action, birth, and old age and death. In some cases, it is said to be nine, as described in the Sutra City, the remaining nine excluding ignorance, action, and consciousness. In some cases, it is said to be eleven, namely for the sake of the naked ascetics, the remaining eleven excluding the dharma of birth. In some cases, the complete twelve dependent origination is taught, namely Light Protector in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir)

From ignorance and so on, the twelve links of dependent origination between birth and old age and death are completely explained. Son of good family, one thing that arises dependently and in conjunction, is explained as different aspects for the sake of individual beings, and the immeasurable mind is also the same. Son of good family, therefore, do not have doubts about the realm of practice spoken by the Thus-Gone One with profound intention. Son of good family, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is endowed with extremely skillful means, and speaks of impermanence as permanence, speaks of permanence as impermanence, speaks of happiness as suffering, speaks of suffering as happiness, speaks of impurity as purity, speaks of purity as impurity, speaks of self as no-self, speaks of no-self as self, speaks of non-sentient beings as sentient beings, speaks of sentient beings as non-sentient beings, speaks of non-things as things, speaks of things as non-things, speaks of untruth as truth, speaks of truth as untruth, speaks of non-objects as objects, speaks of objects as non-objects, speaks of non-birth as birth, from speaking of birth as non-birth, speaks of ignorance as knowledge, speaks of knowledge as ignorance, speaks of form as non-form, and also speaks of non-form as form, speaks of non-path as path, speaks of path as non-path. Son of good family, the Thus-Gone One, with immeasurable skillful means, speaks false words for the sake of taming sentient beings. Son of good family, if some sentient beings are attached to enjoyment, I will emanate as a universal monarch and give them all kinds of things they want for immeasurable years, and then place them in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If some sentient beings are attached to the five desires, I will let them enjoy the most excellent of the five desires for immeasurable years, and then place them in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If some sentient beings become arrogant and conceited, I will be that person's servant for immeasurable years, and make their minds content with great respect, and then place them in unsurpassed perfect
