Chapter Seven, called Brahmacharya. Chapter Seven, called Brahmacharya. The Great Nirvana Sutra, Volume Twenty. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice Brahmacharya? Son of good family, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who abide in the Great Vehicle of Great Nirvana become endowed with Brahmacharya through these seven dharmas. What are the seven? They are: knowing the Dharma, knowing the meaning, knowing the time, knowing the measure, knowing oneself, knowing one's retinue, and knowing superiors and inferiors. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva know the Dharma? Son of good family, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva knows the twelve divisions of the scriptures, namely: Sutra, Geya, Vyakarna, Gatha, Udana, Nidana, Avadana, Itivrttaka, Jataka, Vaipulya, Adbhutadharma, and Upadesha. Son of good family, what is called Sutra is from "Thus have I heard" to "joyfully accepted," which is called Sutra. What is called Geya is what the Bhagavan said to the monks: "We are also very foolish, because we are ignorant, we do not know the Four Noble Truths as they really are, therefore we revolve in samsara and are submerged in the great ocean of suffering." What are the Four Truths? They are the Truth of Suffering, the Truth of the Origin, the Truth of the Cessation, and the Truth of the Path. Previously, after the Bhagavan had spoken the Sutra to the monks, at that time, sharp-witted men came before the Buddha to listen to the Dharma, and asked others, "What did the Bhagavan do here before?" The Bhagavan, knowing full well, in addition to the Sutra previously spoken, also spoke in verse, saying: "I was once like you, not seeing the Four Noble Truths, therefore I revolved in samsara, suffering."

Fall into the great ocean of suffering. Whoever realizes the four truths will completely cut off the cycle of existence. When the existence of birth is completely exhausted, it is impossible to take all existences. These are called the category of chanting. The category of prophecy refers to the fact that in the Sutra Pitaka or Vinaya Pitaka, the Tathagata prophesies the attainment of Buddhahood to some gods and humans, such as: "Maitreya, you will appear in the future as 'King Banner'. At that time, you will attain Bodhi, and your name will also become Loving One." What is said in this way is called the category of prophecy. The category of verses refers to the verses of more than four lines mentioned in the Sutra Pitaka and Vinaya Pitaka, such as: "Do no evil, do all good, subdue your mind, this is the teaching of all Buddhas." What is said in this way is the category of verses. Spontaneous utterance refers to the fact that the Blessed One entered Samadhi in the afternoon and extensively taught the Dharma to the gods. At that time, the monks each thought: What is the Tathagata doing now? The next day, the Tathagata arose from Samadhi, and without being asked by anyone, with his mind-reading wisdom, he said these words: "Monks, know this. All those born in the heavens have extremely long lives. Monks, it is good that you do not seek gain for others. Having few desires is good. Being content is also good. Living in a cemetery is also good." Such spontaneous utterances without being asked are called the category of spontaneous utterances. Jataka refers to the appearance of verses in the Sutra Pitaka, which are explained and elaborated from the Jataka stories. For example, when in Shravasti, a person caught a bird, put it in a cage, fed it water and rice, and then released it. The Blessed One knew its past causes and conditions, and from this he spoke the verse: "Do not despise small evils, thinking they are harmless. Even small drops of water can fill a large vessel."

Ra. Those spoken words are called the section on topics of discussion. What is called 'expressing realization' refers to the examples shown in the Vinaya. Those are called the section on expressing realization. What is called 'such an event' is what the Bhagavan said: "Monks, know this in this way. What I have spoken after going into the world is called the Sutra of the Elements. What the Bhagavan Södkyob spoke after going into the world is called the Five Amritas. What the Buddha, who sees all aspects, spoke after going into the world is called the Mirror of Dharma. What the Bhagavan Ösung spoke after going into the world is called the Differentiation of Emptiness." These mentioned are called the section on such events. What is called 'Jataka' refers to the deeds and austerities performed by the Bhagavan as a Bodhisattva in the past. "Monks, know that I have previously taken the body of a deer, the body of a bear, the body of a spotted deer, the body of a rabbit, the body of a king, the body of a Chakravartin king, the body of a Naga, and the body of a Garuda, etc., and have experienced suffering while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva." This is called the Jataka. What is called 'extensive' refers to the meaning of the Mahayana extensive sutras, which are extremely vast and expansive, like the sky. This is called the extensive sutra section. What is called 'amazing' refers to the Bodhisattva taking seven steps without being shown by anyone immediately after being born, emitting great light, looking in all ten directions, a monkey holding a container of honey and offering it to the Tathagata, a dog named Gongkar listening to the Dharma from the Buddha, the demon Sinister One transforming into a blue bull and entering into many clay begging bowls, touching and shaking each other without breaking, and the Buddha entering the abode of the gods after being born for the first time, with the gods rising and prostrating, etc. These are called the amazing section. What is called 'showing the established' refers to the characteristics of how much meaning is definitively established and differentiated in the sutras spoken by the Buddha Bhagavan.
