Where is perfect enlightenment placed? If a sentient being is naturally arrogant and needs to be advised and tamed by others, then after teaching and taming them for hundreds of thousands of years, making their minds docile, they are then placed in unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Son of good family, is it also false that the Tathagata, for immeasurable years, has placed many beings in unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment through various methods? The Buddha Bhagavan, even when dwelling in non-virtue, is not stained by the mud of faults, like a lotus. Son of good family, the meaning of the four immeasurables should also be understood in this way. Son of good family, the immeasurable mind is naturally of four types. If one diligently practices it, one will be born in the realm of the Great Brahma. Son of good family, in this way, there are four types of things that become companions to the immeasurables; therefore, it is called four. Whoever diligently practices loving-kindness will completely cut off desire. Whoever diligently practices compassion will completely abandon hatred. Whoever diligently practices joy will completely abandon unhappiness. Whoever diligently practices equanimity will completely abandon desire and hatred. Son of good family, therefore, in terms of meaning, there are four types; it is not one, nor two, nor three. Son of good family, as you say, just as loving-kindness abandons hatred, compassion is also the same, so it should be three; do not say that. Why is that? Son of good family, hatred also has two types: hatred that takes life and hatred that involves beating and scolding. Cultivating loving-kindness will abandon the hatred that takes life. Cultivating compassion will abandon the hatred that involves beating and scolding. Son of good family, therefore, in terms of meaning, shouldn't the immeasurables be four? Furthermore, there are two types of hatred: hatred towards sentient beings and hatred towards non-sentient beings. Cultivating loving-kindness will abandon hatred towards sentient beings. Cultivating compassion will abandon hatred towards non-sentient beings. Furthermore, hatr

There are two types of hatred: that which has causes and conditions, and that which does not have causes and conditions. Cultivating loving-kindness will abandon hatred that has causes and conditions. Cultivating compassion will abandon hatred that does not have causes and conditions. Furthermore, there are two types of hatred: that which is habitual from the past, and that which is habitual in the present. Cultivating loving-kindness will abandon the habitual hatred from the past. Cultivating compassion will abandon the habitual hatred in the present. Furthermore, there are two types of hatred: hatred towards noble beings and hatred towards inferior beings. Cultivating the mind of loving-kindness will abandon hatred towards noble beings. Cultivating the mind of compassion will abandon hatred towards inferior beings. Furthermore, there are two types of hatred: intense hatred and moderate hatred. Cultivating loving-kindness will abandon intense hatred. Cultivating compassion will abandon moderate hatred. Son of lineage, the matter is such that although there should be four types, there are only three, and there is no fourth. This is the argument of the objectors. Therefore, Kāśyapa (འོད་སྲུང་,梵文:Kāśyapa, 迦叶波) explained the immeasurable mind as having four aspects, as companions and antidotes. Furthermore, in terms of the vessel, there should be four types. If a vessel has loving-kindness, then it does not have compassion, joy, and equanimity. Therefore, in that sense, it cannot be less than four. Son of lineage, there should also be four types in terms of the distinction of conduct. If there is no compassion, joy, and equanimity at the time of practicing loving-kindness, then these four are evident. Son of lineage, there should also be four types in terms of immeasurability. Furthermore, there are four types of immeasurability. Some immeasurable minds have an object and are therefore not controllable; some minds of loving-kindness are controllable but do not have an object; some minds of loving-kindness have both an object and are controllable; and some minds of loving-kindness have neither an object nor are controllable. So, which immeasurable mind has an object but is not controllable? Some people focus on limitless and boundless sentient beings, but
