Should be practiced. Son of lineage, if that king's mind is certain, that king's irreversible transgressions are indestructible. Because of uncertainty, that transgression is destructible. Therefore, I have made King Ajatasatru's mind certain. Then, the great king went before the Buddha under the Sala tree. Looking at the Tathagata's thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks, he saw him as being like a mountain of pure gold. Then, the Bhagavan emitted eight kinds of melodious sounds and called out, "Great King." At that time, Ajatasatru looked around and thought, "Among this large retinue, who is called 'Great King'? I am burdened with sins and have no merits. What kind of person is the Great King that the Tathagata is speaking of?" Then, the Tathagata again called out, "Great King Ajatasatru." When the king heard this, he felt great joy and thought, "The Tathagata is calling me today, because the Tathagata has loving-kindness for all sentient beings, and great compassion that is equal and impartial to all." Then he said to the Bhagavan, "Bhagavan, I now have not even a trace of doubt. I truly understand that the Tathagata is the supreme and perfect teacher of all sentient beings." Then, the Bodhisattva Light Protector said to all the Bodhisattvas who uphold the Bodhisattva vows, "The Tathagata has made King Ajatasatru's mind certain." Then, King Ajatasatru said to the Bhagavan, "Bhagavan, even if I were with Brahma or Indra, the lord of the gods, or with celestial maidens, I would not be so happy. Meeting the Tathagata and hearing one word from him, I am overjoyed." Then, King Ajatasatru offered umbrellas, banners, flowers, incense, music, and so on, which he had prepared in advance. He prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan, circumambulated him three times to the right, and then sat to one side. Then, the Bhagavan spoke to King Ajatasatru.

O skillful one, great king, please listen attentively and contemplate the profound principles of the sacred Dharma that I shall explain. A base woman always focuses her mind on the body, believing it to possess twenty permanent qualities. These are as follows: My body is like a vessel that needs constant filling, it is not without leaks; it lacks the roots of virtue; this cycle of existence I am in is untamed; I am deeply fallen into a precipice, filled with fear from all directions; by what means can I see the Buddha-nature? How can I see the Buddha-nature through meditating on samadhi? Samsara is always suffering, devoid of permanence, happiness, self, and purity; the eight unfavorable conditions are difficult to abandon; I am deeply afflicted by enemies filled with hostility; there is not even a single Dharma that can turn away from conditioned existence; I have not been liberated from the three lower realms; I possess various ways of viewing evil as bad; I have not accumulated the merit to transcend the five heinous crimes; samsara is without end, it has not reached its conclusion; if actions are not performed, results will not be obtained; the results of actions I have done will not be experienced by others; if the cause of happiness is not created, there will be no result of happiness; even if actions are done, the results will not be lost; born from the cause of ignorance, dying from the cause of ignorance; in the past, future, and present, always engaging in laziness and indolence. These are the twenty. Great king, various base women always examine their bodies with these twenty kinds of contemplation. Having contemplated in this way, they will become disenchanted with samsara. By becoming disenchanted with samsara, they will attain vipashyana and shamatha. Then, gradually, they will examine the mind, the characteristic of arising, the characteristic of abiding, and the characteristic of ceasing. Just as they gradually examine the mind, arising, abiding, and ceasing, so too are samadhi, wisdom, diligence, and discipline. Having realized arising, abiding, and ceasing, if they fully understand from the characteristic of the mind to the characteristic of discipline, then at no time will they do unwholesome deeds, and they will be without the fear of death and the fear of the three lower realms. If one focuses the mind with single-pointed concentration,
