He said, "I am busy today, I will come tomorrow." He said, "Give whatever you want, do not refuse." After saying this, he went back home. Then, if he comes to call again, he says to the servant, "My work is not yet finished, and the medicine has not been prepared." If a learned and wise person knows that the patient will surely die and will not be eaten by a ghost. The great king, the Blessed One, is also like this, thoroughly understanding the faculties and nature of those with wrong views, and also teaches them the Dharma. Why is that? If the Dharma is not taught to them, all the vile people will say, "The Thus-Gone One does not have loving-kindness and great compassion. Having loving-kindness and great compassion is called all-knowing. If there is no loving-kindness, how can one say that he is all-knowing?" For the sake of those people, the Thus-Gone One teaches the Dharma to those with wrong views. Great king, when the Buddha, the Blessed One, sees sick people, he always gives the medicine of the Dharma. Even if the patient does not drink it, the Thus-Gone One is not at fault. Great king, if those with wrong views are distinguished, there are two types: those who obtain roots of virtue in the present and those who obtain roots of virtue in the future. The Thus-Gone One knows which of those with wrong views obtains roots of virtue in the present, and teaches them the Dharma. He also teaches the Dharma to those who will obtain it in the future. Even if it is not beneficial in the present, it will become a cause for the future. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One also teaches the scriptures of the Dharma to those with wrong views. There are also two types of those called wrong views: those with sharp faculties and those with medium faculties. Those with sharp faculties are those who obtain roots of virtue in the present. Those with medium faculties will obtain it in the future. The Buddha, the Blessed One, does not teach the Dharma without meaning. Great king, for example, if an unclean person falls into a cesspool and is seen by a friend, he grabs his hair and pulls him out. Similarly, when the Buddha, the Blessed One, sees beings falling into the three lower realms, he uses methods to raise and extract them. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One teaches the Dharma to all those with wrong views.

Narration. The king said to Jivaka, "If the Tathagata is truly as such, then see, tomorrow, after observing the auspicious day and stars, we will go." Jivaka replied, "Great King, in the Dharma of the Tathagata, there is no such thing as auspicious or inauspicious days and stars. Great King, for example, a seriously ill patient does not look for auspicious days and stars, but seeks a skilled doctor. The king is also like one afflicted with a serious illness, seeking the doctor, the Tathagata, there is no need to look for auspicious days and times. Great King, for example, sandalwood fire and castor oil fire are both similar in their nature of burning, there is no difference. Auspicious and inauspicious days are also like that, if one goes before the Buddha, all sins will be eliminated. Great King, I wish you would depart quickly today." Then the king summoned a minister named Auspicious, and commanded, "Understand this, I am going to the Blessed One Buddha today, quickly prepare the offerings and all that is needed." The minister replied, "Great King, good, good! All the items you desire are ready." Then, King Ajatashatru, together with his consorts, prepared two hundred thousand elaborately decorated chariots, and fifty thousand excellent and large woolly yaks. On each woolly yak, three people rode, carrying umbrellas, banners, flowers, incense, and musical instruments, all kinds of offerings were available. There were also one hundred and eighty thousand cavalry, and fifty-eight hundred thousand people living in the central region, who also followed the king. At that time, in the city of Rājagṛha, the multitude filled an area of twelve yojanas, and everyone saw King Ajatashatru coming with his retinue from afar. Then, the Blessed One said to the multitude of attendants, "For all sentient beings, there is nothing more supreme than the virtuous friend, the virtuous friend is the proximate cause for approaching Arhat Samyak-saṃbuddha. Why is that? Because

If King Ajatashatru did not listen to Jivaka's words, he would be eaten by a demon on the seventh day of the next month, his life would end, and he would fall into the Avici hell. Therefore, there is nothing closer to being a proximate cause than a virtuous friend. As King Ajatashatru was walking on the road, he also heard these words: In Shravasti, there was a king named Vaidurya, who boarded a ship and entered the sea, but was burned to death. The monk Kukari sank alive into the earth and fell into the Avici hell. A man named Sunaksatra committed various kinds of evil deeds and came before the Buddha, saying, "All sins have been purified." After hearing these words, he said to Jivaka, "Today I have heard two such statements, but it is difficult to tell whether they are true or false, and I do not quite believe them. Jivaka, come here, I would like to ride a yak with you. If I fall into the Avici hell, do not let me fall, hold me. Why? Because I have heard before that a person who has attained the path will not go to hell." Then, the Blessed One said to the many attendants, "Great King Ajatashatru is still in doubt, and his doubts must be dispelled." Then, in the center of the assembly, a Bodhisattva named Sarvadharani said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, just as the Blessed One has said, all dharmas are of an indeterminate nature. For example, form is of an indeterminate nature, and even Nirvana is of an indeterminate nature. Since this is so, why does the Tathagata determine the mind of King Ajatashatru?" The Blessed One said, "Good, good! Today I must determine the mind of King Ajatashatru. Why? If the king's mind of doubt can be destroyed, then it should be understood that all dharmas do not have a definite nature. Therefore, I determine the mind of King Ajatashatru, and this very mind of determination is itself indeterminate, and this should be understood.
