Due to the karmic cause of committing the five heinous crimes, encountering the Buddha and hearing the Dharma, one generates the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Great King, if one were to give food and clothing to all sentient beings for a month, it would not equal even one-sixteenth of the merit of a single person remembering the Buddha for just a moment. Great King, if one were to give hundreds of chariots made of gold, it would not equal the merit of someone generating the mind of enlightenment and taking one step towards the Buddha. Great King, if one were to give away various jewels from a great country, along with hundreds of chariots pulled by woolly yaks, and also hundreds of women adorned with necklaces and garlands, it would be more meritorious to take one step in the direction where the Buddha resides with the mind of enlightenment. Let that be for a moment, if one were to give offerings of the four kinds to all sentient beings in the three thousand great thousand world realms, it would be more meritorious to take one step towards the Buddha with the mind of enlightenment. Let that be for a moment, if the Great King were to give to countless sentient beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, it would not equal merely going to listen to the Dharma sincerely before the Tathagata between two Sala trees. Then, the Great King said to Jivaka, "The so-called Buddha Bhagavan is extremely gentle by nature, so the retinue is also extremely gentle, just as in a sandalwood grove, only sandalwood trees surround it. The Tathagata is completely pure, so the retinue is also completely pure, just as a great Naga is completely surrounded by a retinue of Nagas. The Tathagata is utterly peaceful, so the retinue is also utterly peaceful. The Tathagata is without attachment, so the retinue is also without attachment. The Buddha has no afflictions, so the retinue also has no afflictions. Like me, who is extremely sinful, extremely defiled by sinful deeds, extremely foul-smelling and filthy, a hell being.

How should this person, who is under the sway of this realm, go before the Tathagata? Even if I were to go, I fear that the Tathagata would not see me, nor would he grant me teachings. Although you urge me to go before the Buddha, I am so filthy that I do not even have the slightest desire to go. At that time, a voice was heard from the sky above, saying: The unsurpassed Dharma of the Buddha is also near its decline. The extremely deep river is also near drying up. The great lamp of Dharma will not last long. The mountain of Dharma is also near collapsing. The ship of Dharma is also near destruction. The bridge of Dharma is also near breaking. The palace of Dharma is also near collapsing. The banner of Dharma is also near falling. The tree of Dharma is also near breaking. The virtuous spiritual friend is also near departing. The great eon is also near descending. Sentient beings who are hungry for Dharma will soon arise. The plague of afflictions is also near occurring. The time of being oppressed by great darkness has arrived. The time of being impoverished by Dharma is near descending. The king of demons is extremely happy and has even cast off his armor. The sun of the Buddha is also near setting on the summit of the great Nirvana mountain. Great king, if the Buddha were to pass away, then no one else could remedy these sinful deeds of the great king. Great king, you have committed the sins of the Avici hell. Because of that karma, you will undoubtedly fall into hell. Great king, a (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, meaning: no) means non-existence. vi (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, meaning: boundary) means boundary. Because there is not even a little bit of the boundary of happiness, it is called Avici (uninterrupted). Great king, even if only one person were to fall into that hell, his body would fill the entire space of eighty thousand yojanas, without any empty space in between, and his body would be completely surrounded by various kinds of suffering. If many people were to fall, their bodies would also fill the space, piercing each other, without any doubt. Great king, in the cold hells, even encountering a little bit of hot wind is called happiness. In the hot hells, even encountering a little bit of cold wind is called happiness. In the hells of sentient beings
