So it is. And why is that? Because I had doubts in my mind, and perverted views arose. I conceived of someone who was not the Buddha Bhagavan as the Buddha Bhagavan. Now, because I have seen the Buddha Bhagavan, my mind of doubt has been purified. Because doubt has been completely purified, perverted views have ceased. Because perverted views have ceased, from the mind of stinginess to the mind of jealousy, there is nothing. The Bhagavan declared, 'There is no mind of stinginess and jealousy.' Have you now obtained the fruit of once-returning? To obtain the fruit of once-returning is to have no desire. If there is no desire, why did you come to me for the sake of your life? A once-returner has no hope for life. Bhagavan, one who is perverted has hope for life. One who is not perverted has no hope for life. If I speak truthfully, I have no hope for life, but I have hope for the Dharmakaya of the Buddha Bhagavan and the wisdom of the Buddha. Kausika, seeking the Dharmakaya of the Buddha and the wisdom of the Buddha, you will undoubtedly obtain it in the future. At that time, Sakra, the lord of the gods, having heard this from the Bhagavan, the inauspicious signs of the end of his life were eliminated. He arose from his seat, bowed with his head, circumambulated three times, and with reverence, joined his palms and said to the Bhagavan: I have revived from death. I have regained life from losing life. Moreover, I have received the prediction from the Buddha Bhagavan that 'I will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment,' so this is called revival and obtaining life. Bhagavan, how do gods and humans increase and are born? How do they decline and perish? He declared: Kausika, due to the cause of strife and contention, gods and humans decline and perish. Due to the cause of great harmony, they are born and increase. Bhagavan, if strife and contention lead to decline and perishing, from now on I will not contend with the Asuras. The Bhagavan declared: Well done.

Oh, excellent! Kauśika, the Blessed One Buddha, is the supreme and perfect cause of patience! Thus he spoke. At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, bowed to the feet of the Buddha with his head and returned to his abode. Great King, since the Tathagata thus pacifies all inauspicious omens, the Buddha is inconceivable, so it is said. Therefore, if the king also goes to him, all blameworthy deeds will be completely eliminated. Great King, listen also! The Brahmin's son named Ahimsaka, who was named 'Angulimala' because he killed countless beings and wore a garland of fingers, when he prepared to kill his mother and generated a sinful thought, his body also trembled and shook. The shaking of body and mind was due to the cause of committing the five heinous crimes, inevitably falling into hell, but when he met the Buddha, his body and mind still shook, and he still had the thought of killing. The shaking of body and mind was due to the cause of committing the five heinous crimes, if one commits the five heinous crimes, one will inevitably fall into hell. As soon as that person met the Tathagata, the great teacher, the cause of falling into hell was completely purified, and he generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, the Blessed One Buddha is called the supreme physician, not like the six teachers. Great King, furthermore, Prince Sīvala, his father the king became angry and cut off his limbs and threw him into a pit. The queen, out of loving-kindness, dug him out of the pit and took him to where the Buddha was, and as soon as he met the Buddha, his limbs grew back, and he generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Great King, thus meeting the Buddha, the fruit was obtained manifestly, therefore, the Blessed One Buddha is called the supreme physician, not like the six teachers. Great King, there are five hundred pretas on the bank of the Ganges River, who have not seen water for countless years. Even if they go to the water's edge, they see a great pile of fire, and being afflicted by thirst and hunger, they cry out loudly. At that time, the Tathagata

Then the Tathagata resided near that river, in the grove of Udumbara trees. At that time, many pretas came to where the Buddha was and said to the Buddha: "We are afflicted by hunger and thirst, and our lives cannot last long." The Blessed One said: "Why don't you drink the water of the Ganges River?" The pretas replied: "What the Tathagata sees as water, we see as a burning flame." The Blessed One said: "The water of the Ganges River is very clear and blue, and there is no fire at all. It is because sinful actions have caused your minds to be inverted, so you think it is fire. I will dispel your inverted minds and let you see water." Having said this, the Blessed One then showed those many pretas the many faults of stinginess and attachment. Many pretas said: "We are afflicted by hunger and thirst, and even though we have heard much Dharma, we have no mind to receive it." The Blessed One said: "Enter the Ganges River and drink its water to your heart's content!" Those pretas, through the blessing of the Buddha, were able to drink the water. After drinking the water, the Tathagata taught them various aspects of the Dharma. After hearing the Dharma, they generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, abandoned the body of a preta, and obtained the body of a deva. Great King, therefore, the Buddha, the Blessed One, is called the unsurpassed doctor, and is not like the six teachers. Great King, when he was in Shravasti, five hundred wild men had their eyes gouged out by King Krkin and became blind. They had no time to go to where the Buddha was. Because the Buddha, the Blessed One, had compassion for them, he went to the presence of those wild men who had their eyes gouged out, made them happy, and said: "Sons of good family, strictly guard your body, speech, and mind, and do not commit evil in the future!" As soon as those many wild men heard the clear words of the Tathagata from the Buddha, their eyes immediately regained their sight, and they saw the eyes of the Buddha.
