of, one would not be able to greatly benefit all sentient beings. If, by abiding in discipline, I also have the opportunity to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then that is what I desire. Why is that? If I attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then I will be able to extensively teach the sacred Dharma to all sentient beings, becoming their protector and refuge. This is what is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva's recollection of discipline. How then does one recollect generosity? A Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having thoroughly examined it, knows that generosity is the cause of attaining the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas greatly cherish generosity and diligently practice it, so I too should cherish it and diligently practice it. If one does not give generously, one will not become a continuous source of support for the fourfold assembly. Even if generosity does not completely cut off all defilements, it will subdue the defilements of the present. Due to the cause and condition of generosity, one will always be praised and extolled by all sentient beings in the immeasurable and boundless realms of the ten directions, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives food to sentient beings, it is giving life, and as a result, upon attaining enlightenment, one will attain a state that is constant and unchanging. By giving happiness, upon attaining enlightenment, one will attain great happiness. When a Bodhisattva gives generously, what is obtained is in accordance with the Dharma and does not harm others, so upon attaining enlightenment, one will attain completely pure Nirvana. When a Bodhisattva gives generously, sentient beings obtain it without having to specifically ask for it, so upon attaining enlightenment, one will attain the state called the Lord of Sovereignty. Due to the condition of giving generously, others become endowed with power, so upon attaining enlightenment, one will attain the ten powers. Due to the condition of giving generously, others become endowed with eloquence and confidence in speaking, so upon attaining enlightenment, one will attain the four perfect discriminations.

Those who give alms completely become the cause of Nirvana. Therefore, I should also diligently give alms and become the cause of Nirvana. The details will be explained in the sutra called "Various Flowers." So, how does one recollect the deities? From the abode of the Four Great Kings up to the realm of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, there are abodes of deities. Whoever has faith in the deities of the Four Great Kings also has a share. Whoever, through much learning, generosity, and wisdom, from the deities of the Four Great Kings up to the realm of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, I also have a share, but I do not desire it. Why is that? Because from the deities of the Four Great Kings up to the realm of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, everything is impermanent. Because it is impermanent, there is birth, aging, sickness, and death. Therefore, I do not desire it. It is like this: for example, illusion deceives foolish beings, but wise and intelligent people are not attached or deceived by it. Illusion is like the realm from the abode of the Four Great Kings up to the realm of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception. Fools are like all vulgar children, but I am not like foolish ordinary people. I have heard before that the true deities are the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who are permanent, unchanging, unborn, unaging, unsick, and undying. I seek the true deities for the sake of all sentient beings. Why is that? Because the true deities completely cut off the afflictions of sentient beings, like a wish-fulfilling tree. If I have faith up to wisdom, I will attain the true deities and extensively show and explain the true deities to all sentient beings. This is called the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's recollection of the deities. Son of good family, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is not a worldly person, for worldly people do not know, do not see, and do not understand, but the Bodhisattva knows, sees, and understands. Son of good family, if my attendant recites the twelve categories of scriptures

or reciting, or memorizing, or receiving, or holding, or writing in books, or widely showing and explaining to others, and reciting the Great Nirvana Sutra, reading, memorizing, receiving, holding, writing in books, and widely showing and explaining to others, saying that it is similar, is not allowed. What is the reason for that? Son of good family, the Great Nirvana Sutra is the profound meaning of the intention of all Buddhas, the World Honored Ones. Because it is the profound meaning of the intention of the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, it is supreme. Son of good family, therefore, the Great Nirvana Sutra is rare and wonderful, inconceivable. Then, Bodhisattva Light Holder said to the World Honored One: I also think that this Great Nirvana Sutra is rare and wonderful, inconceivable. The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are also inconceivable. The Bodhi of the Bodhisattva and the Great Nirvana Sutra are also inconceivable, I think so. World Honored One, for what reason is it said that the Bodhisattva is also inconceivable? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the mind of Bodhi by himself without being instructed by others. After generating the mind in this way, he makes great effort with diligence, even if a great fire burns his body and head, he does not abandon the recollection of the Dharma, and does not extinguish the fire. What is the reason for that? The Bodhisattva Mahasattva always thinks like this: For countless immeasurable kalpas, I have been revolving in the birth places of sentient beings in hells, hungry ghosts, and animals, as well as in gods and humans, and even if I am burned by the fire of afflictions, I have not obtained even a single definite Dharma. The so-called "definite Dharma" is the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. For the sake of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I do not spare even a little of my body and life. For the sake of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I will grind this body into dust.
