I am the tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is eternal, unchanging, unmoving, endowed with the ten powers and four fearlessnesses, roaring the great lion's roar, is the great ascetic, the great Brahmin, the great Brahma, the one who has reached the end, the one who has reached the other shore and cannot be defeated by others, whose crown is invisible, who is without fear, without shame, unshakeable, alone without a companion, who knows by himself without being taught, with swift wisdom, with great wisdom, with sharp wisdom, with profound wisdom, with liberated wisdom, with unique wisdom, with universally expanding wisdom. Endowed with perfect wisdom, endowed with jewel-like wisdom, like the king of the herd among men, like the king of elephants among men, like the king of nagas among men, a great man among men, like a lotus flower among men, like a Pundarika. He is the tamer of beings, the teacher of men, the great benefactor, the one who teaches the great Dharma, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the Dharma, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the meaning, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the time, teaching the great Dharma because he knows contentment, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the self, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the great retinue, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the various natures of sentient beings, teaching the great Dharma because he knows the sharp, dull, and intermediate faculties, teaching the great Dharma because he teaches the Middle Way. How is one called the Tathagata? Because he does not change from what the Buddhas of the past have said, he is called the Tathagata. How does he not change? The Buddhas of the past also taught the twelve divisions of scripture in order to liberate sentient beings. The Tathagata is also the same as this, so he is called the Tathagata. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, having proceeded from the six perfections, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and the eleven emptinesses, have gone to the great complete nirvana, and the Tathagata is also the same as this, so the Buddha is called the Tathagata. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, for the sake of sentient beings, with that very means.
