If someone says that in the past, future, and present times, the three vehicles have reached perfection, that is not reasonable. Noble son, furthermore, what does it mean to say "existent from the beginning"? I previously said this: "In three months, I will completely pass into nirvana between two sala trees." Therefore, the complete passing into nirvana, which is now very flourishing, will not become the teaching of the Great Vehicle sutras. What does it mean to say "non-existent from the beginning"? It means that from the beginning, bodhisattvas mahasattvas such as Manjushri do not exist. Because they do not exist in this way, it is now said that the Tathagata is impermanent. Regarding this, if any renunciant, brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or human says that the Tathagata is impermanent in the past, future, and present times, that is not reasonable. Noble son, the Tathagata, for the sake of all sentient beings, proclaims, "Knowing all dharmas, yet not knowing." He proclaims, "Seeing all dharmas, yet not seeing." He proclaims, "Dharmas with characteristics are without characteristics." He proclaims, "Dharmas without characteristics also have characteristics." He proclaims, "That which is truly impermanent is also permanent." He proclaims, "That which is truly permanent is also impermanent." Likewise, "self," "bliss," and "complete purity" should also be understood extensively in the same way. The dharmas of the three vehicles are also proclaimed as one vehicle. The one vehicle is also proclaimed as three vehicles according to circumstances. The characteristics of the sutras are proclaimed as extensive characteristics. Extensive characteristics are also proclaimed concisely. The four defeats are also proclaimed as grave offenses. Grave offenses are also proclaimed as the four defeats. That which is blameworthy is proclaimed as blameless. That which is blameless is proclaimed as blameworthy. Light offenses are proclaimed as heavy. Heavy offenses are also proclaimed as light. Why is that? Because the Tathagata clearly sees the faculties of each sentient being. Noble son, the Tathagata speaks in this way, but it is not false. Why is that? Because speaking falsely is faulty, and the Tathagata is completely free from all faults, how could there be falsehood? Noble son, the Tathagata

Although the Tathagata has no false speech, if speaking falsely becomes a means to benefit sentient beings through the Dharma, then it is shown and spoken in various ways. Son of the lineage, all conventional truths are the ultimate truth of the Tathagata. Why is that? Because the Buddha, the Blessed One, speaks the conventional truth from the ultimate truth, otherwise, it is for the sake of ordinary beings attaining the ultimate truth. If ordinary beings do not attain the ultimate truth, the Buddha, the Blessed One, would never speak the conventional truth. Son of the lineage, when the Tathagata speaks the conventional truth at certain times, sentient beings think that the Tathagata is speaking the ultimate truth. Sometimes, when the ultimate truth is spoken, sentient beings think that the Tathagata is speaking the conventional truth. This is the profound realm of activity of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, which is not understood by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Son of the lineage, therefore, you argue that Bodhisattvas, great beings, have nothing to attain. If a Bodhisattva always possesses the ultimate truth, why argue that there is nothing to attain? Light Protector (Aura-raksita) also said: Blessed One, the ultimate truth is also called the path, also called enlightenment, also called Nirvana. If a Bodhisattva attains the path, enlightenment, and Nirvana, then that is impermanent. Why is that? If it is permanent, then it cannot be attained. For example, space cannot be attained by anyone. Blessed One, for example, worldly things that did not exist initially but exist now are called impermanent, and enlightenment is the same. If enlightenment is something that can be attained, then it is called impermanent. If the Dharma is permanent, then it cannot be attained, nor can it arise. For example, Buddhahood cannot be attained, nor does it arise. Blessed One, the path is also form
