Excellent. It is said that the "Great Meaning" is the most excellent of the four individual perfect knowledges. If that is the case, why did the Tathagata say that? Then, the Blessed One praised the Bodhisattva Light Holder, saying, "Good, very good!" Son of good family, for example, the water of the Ganges River is immeasurable, and the water of the Indus River is immeasurable. The water of the Oxus River is immeasurable. The water of the Sita River is immeasurable. The water of Lake Anavatapta is immeasurable. The water of the Great Ocean is immeasurable. Although so many waters are the same in being immeasurable, in reality, the amount is not equal. The four individual perfect knowledges of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas are also the same. Son of good family, it is impossible to say that they are equal. Son of good family, I have especially said to those of inferior intelligence that "the Great Meaning is the most excellent of the four individual perfect knowledges." This is the meaning of your question. Son of good family, some of the followers of the Shravaka Vehicle only obtain one, and some only obtain two. It is impossible to obtain all four completely. The Bodhisattva Light Holder again asked the Blessed One, "As the Blessed One said, in the previously spoken 'Chapter on Pure Conduct,' the Bodhisattva obtains the four individual perfect knowledges through knowledge and vision. But the Bodhisattva does not obtain them through knowledge and vision, and there is no obtaining in the mind, so it is said that there is no obtaining. Blessed One, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva actually has no obtaining. If a Bodhisattva has the thought of obtaining, then he is not a Bodhisattva, but a base commoner." Since that is the case, why did the Tathagata say that a Bodhisattva has obtaining? The Blessed One replied, "Son of good family, good! I was also intending to say, and your question is very good. Son of good family, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva actually obtains nothing, and obtaining nothing is called the four individual perfect knowledges. Son of good family, why is it that obtaining nothing is called individual perfect knowledge? If

If there is attainment, it is called having obstacles. How much is having obstacles, that is the four inversions. Son of the lineage, because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not have the four inversions, he obtains the four individual correct knowledges. Therefore, the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. Son of the lineage, furthermore, having no attainment is called wisdom. Because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva obtains that wisdom, he is called having no attainment. Having attainment is called ignorance. Because the Bodhisattva completely cuts off the darkness of ignorance, he is called having no attainment. Therefore, the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. Son of the lineage, furthermore, having no attainment is called the great Nirvana. Because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides happily in such a great Nirvana, he does not see the characteristics of all phenomena, therefore the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. How much is having attainment, that is the twenty-five existences. Because the Bodhisattva completely cuts off these twenty-five existences and obtains the great Nirvana, therefore the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. Son of the lineage, furthermore, having no attainment is called the Great Vehicle. Because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not abide in all phenomena, he will obtain the Great Vehicle. Therefore, the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. How much is having attainment, that is the Bodhi of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Because the Bodhisattva completely cuts off the Bodhi of the two Lesser Vehicles and obtains the Bodhi of the Buddha, therefore, the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. Son of the lineage, furthermore, having no attainment is called the Sutra Pitaka of great profundity. Because the Bodhisattva reads and recites this Sutra Pitaka, he is called having obtained the great Nirvana. Therefore, the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment. Having attainment is the eleven Sutras. The Bodhisattva only teaches and explains the Sutra Pitaka of the Great Vehicle of great profundity. Therefore, the Bodhisattva is called having no attainment.
