The root of the lotus, the oil of ghee, and the dung of a cow, eating roots and fruits, and even if begging and eating, do not beg from more than one householder. If they say there is none, do not go to excess in begging, and even if called back, do not return. Also, do not taste salt, meat, and the five flavors derived from cow's milk. Always eat bran and drink hot water. Undertake the asceticism of cows, and the asceticism of dogs, birds, and pigs. Smear ashes on the body, and keep hair long as a sign. Sacrifice to the gods with sheep and slaughter them underneath. Do not sacrifice for four months, and eat wind for seven days. Offer hundreds and thousands of flowers to the gods, saying that by this, all desires will be fulfilled, and so on. These dharmas are not a place that becomes the cause of unsurpassed liberation. Those are to be known. What is meant by 'not seeing' is that Bodhisattva Mahasattvas have not seen any being attain true liberation merely by practicing those dharmas, so it is called 'not seeing.' Noble son, furthermore, there are also times when Bodhisattva Mahasattvas see with knowledge. What is meant by 'seeing'? Seeing that if sentient beings practice those wrong paths, they will surely fall into hell, this is called 'seeing.' What is meant by 'knowing'? Knowing that those sentient beings, having been liberated from that hell and reborn as humans, and having fully practiced from the practice of generosity paramita up to the other paramitas, will surely attain true liberation, this is called 'knowing.' Noble son, furthermore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas have seeing and knowing. What is meant by 'seeing'? Seeing permanence and impermanence, suffering and happiness, purity and impurity, self and no-self, this is called 'seeing.' What is meant by 'knowing'? Knowing that the Tathagatas do not ultimately pass into nirvana, and knowing that the body of the Tathagatas is vajra, indestructible, not made of afflictions, and not a body that is dirty, smelly, rotten, or decayed.

One should know it thus. Furthermore, knowing that all sentient beings possess the nature of the Buddha, this is called knowledge. Noble son, moreover, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas possess knowledge and vision. What is knowledge? Knowing which sentient beings possess faith, which sentient beings seek the Great Vehicle, which persons follow samsara, which persons turn away from samsara, which persons abide in the right path, and which sentient beings are well-versed in the Paramitas. Samsara is the inferior common person. Turning away from samsara refers to those who have attained from Stream-enterer up to the Pratyekabuddha. Abiding in the right path refers to the Bodhisattvas. The Paramitas refer to the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, these are called knowledge. What is vision? Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, abiding in the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra, with a mind of pure conduct and extremely pure divine eye, see that common beings, through body, speech, and mind, commit the three non-virtuous actions, and thus are born in the hells, the realm of animals, and the realm of pretas. And they see that common beings diligently perform virtuous actions, and after death, are born in the heavens and as humans. Furthermore, they see that some sentient beings go from darkness to darkness, some sentient beings go from darkness to light, some sentient beings go from light to darkness, and some sentient beings go from light to light, this is called vision. Noble son, moreover, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas possess vision and knowledge. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas see that some common people diligently practice in body, discipline, mind, and wisdom, yet that person will ripen the results of sinful actions in this very life, and due to attachment, hatred, and ignorance, will inevitably ripen the karma of the hells. And they see that some people diligently practice in body, discipline, mind, and wisdom, and therefore experience only slight consequences in this life.
