I say that killing is best until I attain Buddhahood and Bodhisattvahood. By its cause and condition, one will fall into the great Avīci hell and experience great suffering, that is the best killing. Good son, if someone kills a heretic, it does not belong to any of the three kinds of killing. Good son, all those Brahmins are called heretics. For example, digging the ground, cutting grass, cutting trees, stabbing a corpse with a sword, or whipping and beating, will not cause unpleasant results to ripen. Killing a heretic is the same, it does not cause unpleasant results to ripen. Why is that? Because those Brahmins do not have faith and the five faculties, so even if they are killed, they will not fall into hell. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, Chapter Twenty-two. Good son, you should not say this, why did the Tathāgata scold Devadatta, saying he was a fool and ate saliva, what should be done. Why is that? Because everything spoken by the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is inconceivable. Good son, all the people in the world like to speak truthfully. The Buddha never speaks words that are untimely, not in accordance with the Dharma, unprofitable, and not peaceful. Good son, some words are very vulgar, rough, and false, untimely, not in accordance with the Dharma, unpleasant to hear, unprofitable, and not peaceful, I have never spoken these words. Good son, some words, although vulgar and rough, are true and not false, timely, in accordance with the Dharma, beneficial and peaceful to all sentient beings, even if the listener is displeased, they will definitely be spoken. Why is that? Because the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is endowed with wisdom and is very skillful in means. Good son, I once traveled in villages, towns, and forests, and near the forest there was a hungry ghost named the Wild Hermitage, who ate meat and drank blood as food,

It would also cause harm to Bo (place name), and every day it would eat one person from that city. Son of good family, at that time I extensively taught and explained the Dharma to that hungry ghost, but he was angry, fierce, foolish, and without wisdom, so he did not listen to my teachings. At that time, I transformed into a hungry ghost with great power, and even shook his dwelling, making him uncomfortable. At that time, that hungry ghost immediately came out of his dwelling with his retinue, preparing to attack me. At that time, as soon as that hungry ghost saw me, he lost his memory, and as if drunk, he was extremely frightened, fell to the ground and fainted, becoming like a corpse with his breath cut off. Then I generated a heart of loving-kindness and compassion, and stroked his head with my hand, and he immediately awoke and said: Today I have regained my body and life, this great king of gods is extremely powerful and glorious, and he has a heart of loving-kindness and compassion, and has also protected my sins. At that time, that hungry ghost generated a mind of faith in me, and at that time I again transformed into the form of a Tathagata, and also taught and explained various aspects of the Dharma to him, and made that hungry ghost keep the precept of not taking life. At that time, in the city of Drok Gonpa, it was the turn of one householder to be eaten, and the people of the city sent him to that hungry ghost. At that time, that hungry ghost seized that householder and offered him to me. I also accepted him, and named that householder Lakpa (ལག་པ་, Devanagari: हस्त, Roman transliteration: hasta, literal meaning: hand). At that time, that hungry ghost said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, we and our retinue need flesh and blood to sustain our lives, now if we take the precept of not taking life, how shall we live? To that I said: From now on, wherever my close attendant Shravakas diligently practice the Dharma, everyone will give you food. Son of good family, for that reason, the monks have established the rule that they should always give torma (offerings) to the hungry ghost of Drok Gonpa. If torma is not given in the dwellings, then those are not my close attendants, but the army of the Mara of the gods.
