If you think like Rahula, why did the Blessed One say to Devadatta, "Foolish and shameless, eating human snot"? Having heard this, Devadatta harbored resentment and generated an unwholesome mind. He caused the Buddha's body to bleed. Even after Devadatta committed such a sin, the Tathagata prophesied that beings would fall into hell and experience suffering for one kalpa. Isn't it contradictory to the facts that the Blessed One said such a thing? Blessed One, when a monk like the venerable Rahula, who abides in the realm of emptiness, enters a city and begs for alms, he first thoroughly observes the other person. If the other person develops a mind of contempt or slander, even if he is very hungry, he will not beg for alms from them. Why is that? Because the venerable Rahula always thinks like this: Such a person is about to become a field of merit, but by generating just one unwholesome thought, he will fall into the great hell because of that cause and condition, and suffer great pain. I would rather starve and eat unclean things than let others fall into hell and suffer because of despising and slandering me. Thinking like this, he also thinks: If any sentient being mocks me for standing, I will not rise from a clean place. If any sentient being mocks me for sitting, I will not move from standing in a clean place. Walking and lying down are the same. Thus, even the venerable Rahula generates such a mind in order to protect the minds of sentient beings, let alone a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. If one attains a position like that of an only child, why did the Tathagata speak such unspeakable words, causing many sentient beings to generate extremely unwholesome minds? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, do not argue in this way, saying that the Buddha Blessed One causes the afflictions of ordinary beings. Son of good family, if the mouth of a bee

Even if the depths of the ocean were exhausted, it might happen, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, even if this great earth were to become non-material, water were to become of a dry nature, fire were to become of a cold nature, wind were to become of a stationary nature, the Three Jewels and the Buddha-nature, and space were to become of an impermanent nature, it might happen, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, even if the four root vows of morality were to be broken, becoming a heretic, and slandering the holy Dharma, one might attain the ten powers, fearlessness, the thirty-two marks, and the eighty minor marks with this very body, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, even if the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas and so forth were to abide forever and not change, it might happen, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, even if the Bodhisattvas abiding on the ten bhumis were to break the four root vows of morality, become heretics, and slander the holy Dharma, it might happen, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, even if all limitless sentient beings were to become without Buddha-nature, and the Tathagata were also to ultimately pass into complete Nirvana, it might happen, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, even if one could catch the wind with a rope, cut iron with a sickle, or destroy Mount Meru with a fingernail, it might happen, but the Tathagata would not become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. It would be better to dwell with a poisonous snake, put one's hand into the mouth of a hungry lion, or bathe one's body with the ashes of a Kadala, than to say that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, would become the cause of suffering for sentient beings. Son of good family, the Tathagata is truly mindful.

It completely cuts off the afflictions of those who have afflictions, and at no time does it become a cause of affliction. Son of good family, as you said, the Tathagata killed a Brahmin in the past. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, even as a child, would not intentionally kill even an ant, let alone kill a Brahmin? Bodhisattvas always use various skillful means to give sentient beings immeasurable life. Son of good family, giving food is called giving life. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of generosity, he always gives sentient beings immeasurable life. Son of good family, completely abandoning killing and keeping the precepts will lead to longevity. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of discipline, he gives all sentient beings immeasurable life. Son of good family, being free from faults in speech will lead to longevity. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of patience, he does not show hatred to sentient beings, attributes good to others, takes on bad himself, and is free from disputes, which leads to longevity. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva practices the perfection of patience, it is called giving sentient beings immeasurable life. Son of good family, diligence in virtue will lead to longevity. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of diligence, he always encourages sentient beings to strive for virtue, so that each individual being can practice in this way, thereby obtaining immeasurable life. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of diligence, it is giving sentient beings immeasurable life. Son of good family, striving to gather the mind will lead to longevity. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of meditation, he encourages sentient beings to strive for the mind of equanimity, making the mind
