Saying, "What should we do?" they listened as instructed. All the trees were cut down, and the water was drained. They prepared for war and defended the city. Son of good family, when I went to that city at that time, not a single forest or garden was visible. I saw many people holding weapons and staying there. Seeing such a sight, I was very compassionate and generated a mind of loving-kindness. All the forests and gardens grew back, and countless other trees grew as well. All the springs, ponds, wells, and rivers became very clear and pure, like blue lapis lazuli. They were filled everywhere, and covered with various kinds of flowers. The wall around the city also became like dark blue lapis lazuli, and all the people living in that city clearly saw me and my retinue miraculously. The city gate also opened by itself, without any obstruction. The weapons also turned into various kinds of flowers. The householder, desiring to be the leader, led all the people with their retinues to the presence of the Bhagavan. I taught them various kinds of Dharma, and they all generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Son of good family, at that time, I did not actually restore the forests and gardens, nor did I fill the springs and ponds with clean water, nor did I transform the city wall into lapis lazuli, nor did I cause the people living there to see me miraculously, nor did I cause the city gate to open by itself, nor did I transform the weapons into flowers. However, son of good family, it was through the power of the root of virtue of loving-kindness that those people saw those things. Son of good family, furthermore, in Shravasti, there was a Brahmin woman named Vasita who had an only son. She loved him dearly, but he died from illness. At that time, that woman was tormented by great sorrow and was driven mad. She ran around naked, without any shame, crying at the crossroads, calling out, "My son, where has my son gone?" She wandered throughout the city without feeling tired.

Son of good family, that woman was one who had planted roots of virtue with the Buddhas of the past. Because of that, I generated a mind of loving-kindness towards that woman. At that time, that woman saw me and generated the perception of me as her son. Immediately, she regained her senses, took me into her lap, and kissed me. At that time, at that moment, I commanded Delightful One to give this Dharma robe to that woman. Having given her the Dharma robe, I taught the Dharma in various ways. Having heard the Dharma, that woman was exceedingly delighted and rejoiced, and she generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Son of good family, at that time, truly, I was not her son, and she was not my mother. Although there was no taking into the lap or kissing, son of good family, it should be understood that due to the power of the roots of virtue of loving-kindness, that woman perceived such things. Son of good family, furthermore, in the city of Serkya (Kapilavastu), there was a female lay follower named Maha Sinadata, who in the past had extensively planted roots of virtue with countless Buddhas. She invited the Sangha for three months and offered medicine for illnesses. At that time, among those Sangha, one bhikshu was afflicted with a severe illness. After consulting a doctor and examining him, he declared, 'This illness must be treated with meat. Without meat, life cannot be sustained for long.' At that time, the female lay follower heard those words and, taking gold, said this in the marketplace: 'Hey, do you have any meat for sale? I will give gold equal in value to the meat.' Although she searched throughout the marketplace, she could not find any meat. Then, that female lay follower took a knife and cut off the flesh from her own thigh, chopped it up, made it into minced meat, seasoned it with various spices, and gave it to that sick bhikshu. Having eaten the meat, that bhikshu was cured of his illness. At that time, that female lay follower, suffering from the wound of the cut flesh, experienced great and unbearable pain. She prostrated to the Buddha, saying: 'I prostrate to the Buddha! I prostrate to the Buddha!' she called out. At that time, at that moment, I was residing in Nyen (Shravasti), and having heard her call out in that way, I developed great compassion for that woman, because that woman
