Son of good family, if loving-kindness cannot attain the ten powers and four fearlessnesses of the Buddha, then it should be known that that loving-kindness is the loving-kindness of a Hearer. Son of good family, that loving-kindness by which the fruit of a renunciate will be attained, it should be known that that loving-kindness is the loving-kindness of a Hearer. Son of good family, that loving-kindness which includes existence, non-existence, and neither existence nor non-existence, is not able to be measured by all, such as Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Son of good family, if loving-kindness is inconceivable, then the Dharma is also inconceivable. The nature of the Buddha is also inconceivable. The Thus-Gone One is also inconceivable. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva, a great being, abiding in the great vehicle's complete Nirvana, makes effort in such loving-kindness. Even abiding in the bliss of sleep, he always exerts diligence, so he is not overcome by sleep. He is always awake, but because there is no sleep, there is also no being awake. In sleep, he completely protects the gods, but because he does not commit sins, there is also no protecting. Because he is completely separated from sleep, there is no bad dream or anything that becomes unwholesome. Although born as a Brahma god, because he is in control, there is also no birth. Son of good family, whoever makes effort in loving-kindness will become endowed with such immeasurable, inconceivable qualities. Son of good family, this noble sutra of complete Nirvana is also endowed with such immeasurable, inconceivable qualities. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is also endowed with such immeasurable, boundless qualities. The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, if all that Bodhisattvas, great beings, remember is truly unerring, but the truth of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is not so, then why do Bodhisattvas, great beings, not cause all sentient beings to equally experience happiness through their power? If all sentient beings do not truly experience happiness in this way, then making effort in the loving-kindness mind of a Bodhisattva is of no benefit. Bhagavan!

said: Son of lineage, the loving-kindness of a Bodhisattva is not without benefit. Son of lineage, some sentient beings will definitely experience suffering, while others will not. For those with wrong views who are certain to experience suffering, the loving-kindness of a Bodhisattva is of no benefit. For those who are uncertain whether they will experience suffering, the loving-kindness of a Bodhisattva is beneficial, as these sentient beings experience great happiness. Son of lineage, for example, when a person sees lions, tigers, wolves, rakshasas, and hungry ghosts, etc., in the distance, they naturally experience fear and dread. If they see a cliff at night, they will also experience fear in the same way. Son of lineage, just as that person naturally experiences fear, when sentient beings see someone diligently practicing loving-kindness, they naturally experience happiness. Son of lineage, therefore, a Bodhisattva's diligent practice of loving-kindness is correct mindfulness, and it is not without benefit. Son of lineage, I have explained the immeasurable aspects of loving-kindness, such as clairvoyance and so on. Son of lineage, for example, Devadatta showed King Ajatashatru that the Tathagata had been killed. At that time, when I entered Rajagriha to beg for alms in sequence, King Ajatashatru sent mad elephants guarding his treasure to kill me and my disciples. At that time, those mad elephants trampled and killed countless hundreds of thousands of sentient beings, and they became even more mad after being splattered with the blood of those dead sentient beings. My disciples who were wearing reddish-brown robes were also mistaken for blood. Those mad elephants abandoned them and ran away. Among my disciples, all those who had not abandoned desire fled in all four directions, except for the venerable Ananda. At that time, at that time, all the people living in Rajagriha wept in unison, shedding tears and saying: Alas! The Tathagata is no more! Why has the Tathagata disappeared so suddenly like this? At that time, Devadatta experienced extraordinary joy.
