When offering the light of a lamp with a compassionate heart, one should make the following aspiration: May this generosity that I have given be shared by all sentient beings. Through this cause and condition, may all sentient beings possess immeasurable light and abide peacefully in the Dharma of the Buddha. May all sentient beings always be illuminated by light. May all sentient beings possess excellent color and be endowed with extraordinary, radiant brilliance. May all sentient beings possess extremely pure eyes and eliminate the dimness of blindness. May all sentient beings possess the lamp of omniscient wisdom and be extremely skilled in no-self (Tibetan: བདག་མེད་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: अनात्म, Sanskrit Romanization: anātma, Literal Chinese Meaning: no-self), no sentient being (Tibetan: སེམས་ཅན་མེད་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: असत्त्व, Sanskrit Romanization: asattva, Literal Chinese Meaning: non-sentient), no person (Tibetan: གང་ཟག་མེད་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: अपुद्गल, Sanskrit Romanization: apudgala, Literal Chinese Meaning: non-person), and no life (Tibetan: སྲོག་མེད་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: अजीव, Sanskrit Romanization: ajīva, Literal Chinese Meaning: non-life). May all sentient beings see the perfectly pure Buddha-nature as being like the sky. May all sentient beings possess extremely pure eyes and clearly see the ten directions of the world, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. May all sentient beings possess the light of the Buddha and illuminate the ten directions. May all sentient beings possess unobstructed eyes and may all see the perfectly pure Buddha-nature. May all sentient beings obtain the light of great wisdom and conquer all darkness and all those with wrong views. May all sentient beings possess immeasurable light and illuminate all immeasurable Buddha-fields. May all sentient beings establish the lamp of the Great Vehicle and abandon the lamp of the two Lesser Vehicles. May all sentient beings possess the light of illumination, dispel the darkness of ignorance, and possess the qualities of universal illumination that surpass a thousand suns. May all sentient beings obtain the illumination called the "Jewel of Firelight" and dispel all the darkness of the three-thousand great-thousand world systems. May all sentient beings possess the five eyes, realize the characteristics of all phenomena, and understand them on their own without needing a teacher. May all sentient beings not look towards ignorance. May all sentient beings be illuminated by the light of the Great Vehicle's complete Nirvana, bringing enlightenment to all sentient beings.

May it truly reveal the nature of the Buddha! Thus I pray. Noble son, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva makes offerings of light with a mind of loving-kindness, he should always firmly generate these aspirations. The Sutra of the Great Nirvana, the twenty-first fascicle. Noble son, the basis for the roots of virtue of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is loving-kindness. Noble son, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva diligently cultivates loving-kindness, these immeasurable roots of virtue will arise. For example: contemplating ugliness, counting the breaths going in and out, impermanence, birth, cessation, the four mindfulnesses, the seven skillful means, the three doors of liberation, the twelve links of dependent origination, contemplating selflessness and so on, as well as warmth, the peak, forbearance, the supreme worldly dharma, the path of seeing, the path of cultivation, the right abandonments, the legs of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eight branches of the noble path, the four meditations, the four immeasurables, the eight liberations, the eight abodes of victory, the ten all-pervading spheres, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, the samadhi of non-contention, the wisdom of knowing the minds of others, the superknowledges, as well as the wisdom of knowing the beginning, the wisdom of the Hearers, the wisdom of the Solitary Buddhas, the wisdom of the Bodhisattvas, and the wisdom of the Buddhas, all of these dharmas have loving-kindness as their basis. Noble son, therefore, loving-kindness is the true truth, it is not false. Noble son, if someone asks: What is the basis for all roots of virtue? Answer: It is loving-kindness. Therefore, it is true, it is not false. Noble son, that which turns into virtue is truly thinking. Truly thinking is loving-kindness. Loving-kindness is the Tathagata.
