Even for non-existent dharmas, there are two aspects: possessing causes and possessing results. That which possesses defilements and possesses results is called suffering. That which possesses defilements and possesses causes is called the origin. That which is without defilements and possesses results is called cessation. That which is without defilements and possesses causes is called the path. Noble son, furthermore, these eight characteristics are called suffering. Namely: the suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, the suffering of separation from what is desired, the suffering of encountering enemies, the suffering of not obtaining what is desired, and the five aggregates are suffering. That which causes these eight sufferings to arise is called the origin. The place where these dharmas cease is called cessation. There are also three types of dying from external causes: unreasonably hanging oneself to death, and being killed by others, and dying from both. Furthermore, there are three types of death. Slandering the greatly expanded Mahayana Prajnaparamita is called dying from carelessness. What is dying from the breaking of vows? Separation from the body of the five aggregates is called dying from the destruction of the life force, those are called the great suffering of death. What is the suffering of desire and separation?
