When contemplating "Po," this great earth, including south, north, east, west, the four intermediate directions, above, and below, is all seen as blue. Just as contemplating blue, so too are yellow, white, and colors like a pigeon's wing. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva contemplates in this way, blue, yellow, red, white, and colors like a pigeon's wing emanate from between the eyebrows. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva sees Buddhas residing in each of those rays of light, and asks them: This body arises from impure causes and conditions, interdependent, how should one inquire? It is like this: This body's sitting, standing, walking, dwelling, bending, stretching, looking, blinking, breathing, weeping, laughing, rejoicing, if there is no master, who causes it to change in this way? Thus he asks. After asking this, the Buddhas residing in the light, though many, become invisible. The Sutra of the Great Nirvana, Volume Sixteen. Again, he thinks: Could it be that this consciousness is the "self"? But why have the Buddhas not taught about the "self"? Again, examining consciousness, consciousness arises and ceases moment by moment like a stream of water, therefore it is not the "self." Again, he thinks: This breath that moves inside and outside is wind, and the nature of wind is the four great elements. Among the four great elements, which can be called "self"? The nature of earth is not the "self," and likewise, the nature of water, fire, and wind is not the "self," so he thinks. Again, he thinks: In this body, there is no "self" to be found in anything. It is from the causes and conditions of the aggregation of mind and wind that various kinds of actions manifest, like a mantra or the work of a magician. Furthermore, the nine orifices are like the strings of a lute, producing sounds at will. Therefore, this body is impure, dependent on the aggregation of causes and conditions, so what is there to be attached to? Even if others insult or slander, one should not generate hatred.

Furthermore, what is there? This body of mine is completely filled with thirty-six kinds of impurities, so what is the point of scolding and rebuking? Even when hearing scolding, one should think like this: What sound will scold? If one examines each sound individually, one does not see the existence of scolding. Just as there is none in one, many are the same, so anger does not arise. If others beat you, you should also think like this: Where did this beating come from? If you examine it, the beating comes from the assembly of hands, strength, sticks, and my body. Why be angry with others? It is because my body exists that I experience such things. It is because this body of my five aggregates exists that it has become like this. For example, just as an arrow comes because there is a target, my body is also like that. Because there is a body, there is beating. If I do not endure the body, my mind will be disturbed. If the mind is disturbed, correct mindfulness will be lost. If correct mindfulness is lost, one will not understand the meaning of good and non-good. If one does not understand the meaning of good and non-good, one will practice inappropriate Dharma. If one practices inappropriate Dharma, sentient beings will fall into the realms of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. At that time, the Bodhisattva, understanding in that way, will attain the four close placements of mindfulness. Having attained the four close placements of mindfulness, one will abide in the ground of extreme patience. When the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in that ground in that way, he will endure desire, hatred, and delusion. Furthermore, he will endure cold, heat, hunger, thirst, mosquitoes, gadflies, wind, unpleasant tactile sensations, various diseases, scolding with bad words, rebukes, beatings, bindings, whippings, and in short, all things that cause suffering to body and mind. Therefore, it is called abiding in the ground of extreme patience. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Kashyapa said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, until the Bodhisattva abides in the immovable ground, the precepts
