我也曾在 Jambudvipa(赡部洲)做过一位伟大的国王,名叫正直。

If one perfectly guards the precepts, what causes and conditions would lead to the decline of the precepts? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, there are. Until a Bodhisattva abides in the immovable ground, there are causes and conditions that lead to the decline of the precepts. The Venerable Mahākāśyapa was amazed and asked: What are those? The Blessed One said to Mahākāśyapa: Bodhisattvas, by the cause and condition of their own precepts declining, if they cause other beings to believe in, rejoice in, uphold, recite, understand, and write the Mahāyāna sūtras, and extensively explain and teach them to others, just to the extent that they do not turn back from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, therefore, they would rather let their own precepts decline. At that time, the Bodhisattva would think: I would rather fall into the great hell of uninterrupted suffering for one kalpa or one kalpa less, but I will cause those beings not to turn back from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Mahākāśyapa, by that cause and condition, the pure precepts of the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva will decline. At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva, in order to protect and gather other beings so that they do not turn back from the mind of enlightenment, even if the precepts decline, there is no place for them to fall into the hell of uninterrupted suffering. Then, the Blessed One said to Mañjuśrī: Well done, very well done! Just as you have said. In the past, I was also a great king in Jambudvipa called Righteous. I had great respect and reverence for the Mahāyāna sūtras, and I had great faith and admiration for them. I was wholeheartedly devoted to virtuous deeds, without faults such as jealousy and stinginess. My speech always spoke pleasant words, proclaiming and teaching the Dharma. My bodily actions were to be a protector and friend to the poor and helpless, practicing generosity.

Therefore, I strived diligently without interruption. At that time, in that era, in the world, there was no Buddha residing. There were no Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas either. At that time, because of faith and fondness for the greatly flourishing Mahayana sutras, I served as a Brahmin servant for twelve years, providing them with whatever possessions they desired. After giving them comfort for twelve years, I said to those teachers: O teacher, may you generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment! The Brahmin said: Great King, the nature of Bodhi is nothing at all. The Mahayana sutras are also the same as that. Great King, why do you revere the word 'non-existence,' saying that it is equal to space? Son of good family, at that time, because I greatly cherished the Mahayana, after hearing those words of the Brahmin slandering the greatly flourishing Mahayana, at that time I killed that Brahmin. Son of good family, because of that cause, that condition, from then on I have not been born in hell. Son of good family, the power and strength of protecting and saving the Mahayana sutras is immeasurable in that way. Light Protector, furthermore, the conduct of the noble ones is like this: the Four Noble Truths. And what are they? Suffering, origin, cessation, and path are called the Four Noble Truths. Light Protector, suffering is the nature of emaciation and torment. Origin is the nature of arising and increasing. Cessation is the nature of pacification and cessation. Path is the nature of the Mahayana. Son of good family, furthermore, suffering is the nature of manifest appearance. Origin is the nature of change. Cessation is the nature of elimination. Path is the nature of change through elimination. Son of good family, furthermore, there are three types of suffering: the suffering of suffering, the suffering of conditioning, and the suffering of change. Origin is the twenty-five existences. Cessation is the cessation of the twenty-five existences. Path is the practice of ethics, concentration, and wisdom. Son of good family, furthermore, defiled dharmas also have two aspects: having a cause and having a result. Defiled
