Sixth, the chapter called "The Conduct of the Noble Ones." Sixth, the chapter called "The Conduct of the Noble Ones." Then, the Bhagavan addressed the Bodhisattva Light-Protector, saying: "Son of good family, the great Bodhisattvas should keep in mind five kinds of conduct from this Great Nirvana Sutra. What are the five? They are the conduct of the noble ones, the conduct of Brahma, the conduct of the gods, the conduct of children, and the conduct with faults. Son of good family, the great Bodhisattvas should be extremely diligent in these five conducts. Furthermore, there is one other conduct, which is the conduct of the Tathagata. This is also the Great Nirvana Sutra of the Great Vehicle. Light-Protector, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the conduct of the noble ones? If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva hears this Great Nirvana Sutra from a Shravaka or a Tathagata and generates faith, having generated faith, he should think and remember thus: The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have the unsurpassed path, they have the great and true Dharma, and many retinues practice correctly. Furthermore, there is the greatly extensive Great Vehicle Sutra, and I should also have faith and devotion in it. In order to seek the Great Vehicle Sutra, one should completely abandon wives, children, retinues, dwelling houses, gold, silver, jewels, excellent ornaments, flowers, incense, music, male servants, female servants, working people, boys, girls, yaks, horses, carts, cows, sheep, birds, dogs, pigs, and so on, to which one is very attached. Furthermore, one should think thus: Living at home is very narrow, like a prison, and all afflictions arise from it. Going forth is very vast, like the sky, and all virtuous dharmas arise and increase from it. Living at home does not lead to the ultimate end of life. For the sake of practicing pure conduct, I should shave my hair and beard, go forth from home to homelessness, and go towards enlightenment."

Thinking that I should strive diligently, I renounced the world and diligently pursued the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. When a Bodhisattva renounces the world in this way, the evil Mara becomes extremely distressed and says, "This Bodhisattva will also contend with me." Son of good family, how would a Bodhisattva contend with others? At that time, the Bodhisattva goes to the dwelling place of the Sangha, and if he encounters a Tathagata, or a close attendant of the Tathagata who possesses virtuous conduct, whose senses are pacified, whose mind is gentle and tamed, pure and extremely tranquil, he goes to him and requests ordination, shaving his hair and beard and wearing the saffron robes. Having thus renounced the world, he completely guards the precepts, his conduct does not decline, his conduct is upright, he does not commit offenses, and even for the smallest transgression, he generates a mind of fear, and his mind of guarding the precepts is as firm as a diamond. Son of good family, for example, a person takes a swimming ring and enters the ocean. At that time, a Rakshasa in the ocean asks that person for the swimming ring. Having heard this, the person thinks, "If I give him this swimming ring, I will surely sink into the water and die." Then he says to the Rakshasa, "Even if you kill me, I cannot give you the swimming ring." The Rakshasa says again, "If you cannot give it all, can you at least give half?" But the person still does not give it. The Rakshasa says again, "If you cannot give half, can you give one-third?" But the person still does not give it. The Rakshasa says again, "If you cannot give one-third, can you give at least the size of a palm?" But the person still does not give it. The Rakshasa says again, "If you do not give even the size of a palm, I am very hungry and tormented by suffering, please give me just a speck of dust." The person says, "This thing you are asking for is not big, it is very small, but I have not yet crossed the ocean, nor have I determined the distance to the other shore, if I give it to you,

Because bubbles emerge outwards, how can one be liberated from the obstacles in the ocean? I will die in the water. Son of the lineage, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva completely guarding the precepts is also similar to this. Just as a person crossing the ocean cherishes swimming, when a Bodhisattva guards the precepts, the wicked demons of afflictions will say this to the Bodhisattva: "Trust what I say, I will not deceive you. Even if you violate the four root downfalls, but if you guard other precepts, by this cause and condition, you will attain the bliss of Nirvana." At that time, the Bodhisattva will say this: "I would rather fall into the hell of uninterrupted suffering by guarding these precepts, than violate the precepts and be reborn as a god in the heavens." The demon of afflictions will also say this: "If you do not want to violate the four root downfalls, even if you do not guard the Sanghavasesha precepts, by this cause and condition, you will attain the bliss of Nirvana." But the Bodhisattva will not follow these words. The demon of afflictions will also say this: "If you do not want to violate the Sanghavasesha precepts, even if you violate the Parajika Dharma, by this cause and condition, you will attain the bliss of Nirvana." But the Bodhisattva will not follow these words. The demon of afflictions will also say this: "If you do not want to violate the Parajika Dharma, even if you violate the Nissaggiya Pacittiya Dharma, by this cause and condition, you will attain the bliss of Nirvana." But the Bodhisattva will not follow these words. The demon also said: "If you do not want to violate the Nissaggiya Pacittiya Dharma, even if you violate the ninety Pacittiya Dharmas, by this cause and condition, you will attain the bliss of Nirvana." But the Bodhisattva will not follow these words. The demon also said this: "If you do not want to violate the ninety Pacittiya Dharmas, even if you violate the Dukkata Dharma, by this cause and condition, you will
