The extensively expanded Sutra also possesses immeasurable and boundless qualities in the same way. Those Sutras cannot even compare to this Sutra as an example. They cannot compare to even a hundredth part, a thousandth part, or a hundred thousandth part, even up to calculation, number, or analogy. Son of good family, for example, from milk comes curd, from curd comes butter, from butter comes ghee, from ghee comes clarified butter, and from clarified butter comes the essence of ghee. The essence of ghee is the most supreme and excellent. Whoever drinks it will have all kinds of diseases disappear, and it can also be included in all medicines. Son of good family, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is also like that. From the Buddha come the twelve categories of scriptures. From the twelve categories of scriptures comes the collection of Sutras. From the collection of Sutras comes the extensively expanded Sutra. From the extensively expanded Sutra comes the Prajnaparamita. From the Prajnaparamita comes the great Nirvana, like the essence of ghee. The so-called essence of ghee is an analogy for the Buddha-nature. The so-called Buddha-nature is the Tathagata. Son of good family, therefore, the qualities of the Tathagata are immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable. Then, the Bodhisattva Light Protector again said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, as the Tathagata said, the Nirvana Sutra is like the essence of ghee, being the most supreme and excellent. Whoever drinks it will have diseases disappear, and it can also be included in all medicines. Having heard this, I thought: Whoever does not listen to or recite this Sutra is extremely foolish and lacks virtuous intention. Bhagavan, I can endure peeling off my skin to use as paper for writing, drawing blood to use as ink, extracting marrow to use as water, and carving bones to use as a pen, to write this Nirvana Sutra. After writing it, I will also read, recite, understand, and also for others

It is also permissible to extensively show and explain. World Honored One, if any sentient being becomes attached to enjoyment, I will first give him enjoyment, and then urge him to read this Great Nirvana Sutra. If he is one who possesses great enjoyment, I will first speak sweet words that please his mind, and then urge him to read this Great Vehicle Great Nirvana Sutra. If he is a lowly person, I will also forcefully make him read it. If he is an arrogant person, I will first serve him as he wishes, making him very happy and satisfied, and then show him this Nirvana Sutra. If there is someone who slanders this very extensive sutra, then one should subdue him with power. After subduing him, then make him read this Nirvana Sutra. If there is someone who has faith and delight in the Great Vehicle Sutra, I will go to him and, with great respect, perform service, respect, offerings, and praise. Then, the World Honored One said to the Bodhisattva Light Holder: Good, good! You have great faith in the Great Vehicle Sutra, you are very happy with the Great Vehicle Sutra, you desire the Great Vehicle Sutra, you delight in the taste of the Great Vehicle Sutra, you have great faith in the Great Vehicle, and you do service, respect, and offerings. Good! Son of good family, with such a very virtuous mind, with this as the cause and this as the condition, you surpass countless and boundless Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, as many as the sands of the Ganges River. Because of them, they will first attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. You will soon, in many wheel circles, show and explain this Nirvana Sutra, which is the essence of the Tathagata Buddha's nature. Son of good family, in the past, in the time when the sun of the Buddha had not yet risen, at that time I was a Brahmin, and when practicing the Bodhisattva conduct, all the heretics...

Having mastered all the tenets of the heretics, he behaves with utmost serenity. Possessing conduct and with a completely pure mind, he does not generate thoughts of desire due to external causes, having extinguished the fire of hatred. Keeping in mind the qualities of permanence, bliss, self, and purity, although searching in all directions for the sutras of the Great Vehicle, he did not even hear the name of its vastness. At that time, I dwelt on a snow mountain, that mountain being extremely secluded, filled with springs, rivers, bathing ponds, growing trees, forests, and plants. In the intervals of that dwelling, clear springs flowed from the rocks, adorned with fragrant flowers, and birds and wild animals were countless. There were also countless kinds of fruit trees with exceedingly delicious flavors, and furthermore, it was filled with red lotus roots and fragrant blue tree roots. At that time, at that time, I dwelt alone there, eating only the fruits of the trees. Having eaten, with a single-pointed mind, I focused on samadhi, and for countless years, I had not even heard that the Tathagata would appear in the world, nor had I heard the name of the sutras of the Great Vehicle. Son of good family, when I practiced such austerities, Indra, the lord of the gods, and the sons of the gods were greatly astonished, and gathering together, each thought thus, and spoke this verse: One to another, they said thus: On this pure snow mountain, there is a master of utmost serenity, having abandoned desire, a king with eight qualities. He has abandoned desire, hatred, and pride, completely cut off ignorance and deceit. He does not speak from his mouth, those harsh and rude words. At that time, in that assembly, a son of the gods named 'Very Joyful' also spoke in verse: Having abandoned desire in this way, being completely pure and exerting great effort, does he desire the means of Indra, the lord of the gods? Or does he desire to be born in the realm of the gods? If he is a heretic, then practicing such difficult austerities, it is to seek the power and means of Indra, the lord of the gods. At that time, another son of the gods named 'One Sage' spoke in verse to Indra.
