If it is said that because it is not a place, one knows there is a self, since there is no companion, there is no reason for a self. There are dharmas without companions, such as the Tathagata, space, and the nature of the Buddha. The so-called self is also like them, truly without companions, therefore there is definitely no self. Noble son, furthermore, if the heretics say that because of naming, one knows there is a self, for the dharma of no-self, there is also a name that calls it no-self. For example, giving a very poor person the name "rich." Also, like saying, "I am dead," if the so-called self dies, then the self would kill the self. The so-called self is actually impossible to kill, but in name it is called killing the self. For example, like calling a short person "tall," therefore one must know there is no self. Furthermore, noble son, if the heretics say that because a baby immediately seeks milk upon birth, one knows there is a self. Noble son, if the so-called self exists, then all small babies would grasp unclean vomit, fire, snakes, and poison. Therefore, there is definitely no self. Noble son, all sentient beings equally possess these three kinds of wisdom, namely desire, eating, and fear, therefore there is no self. Furthermore, noble son, if the heretics say that because of signs and mere forms, one knows there is a self. Noble son, with signs there is no self, and without signs there is no self. For example, when a person is asleep, there is no going, coming, stretching, bending, or looking, and one does not feel pleasure or pain, so there is a reason for a self. If one knows there is a self because there is going, coming, stretching, bending, and looking, then a wooden automaton should also have a self. Noble son, the Tathagata is also like this, not going, not staying, not stretching, not bending, not looking, not smiling, not suffering, not happy, not desiring, not hating, not deluded, not acting, just like that.

Furthermore, the Thus Come One is called the true self. Moreover, son of good family, if those non-Buddhists eat sour fruit and know that there is a self from the saliva that arises, son of good family, having seen the saliva arising from memory, the saliva is not the self. The self is also not saliva. It is not joy, not sorrow, not laughter, not anger, not falling, not birth, not thirst, not satiety. Therefore, it is certain that there is no self. Son of good family, those non-Buddhists are like small children who have not separated the chaff, without knowledge, without means, without realization. They do not know permanence and impermanence, suffering and happiness, purity and impurity, self and no-self, sensation and non-sensation, sentient beings and non-sentient beings, happiness and unhappiness, existence and non-existence. Having taken a small portion from the Buddha's teachings, they grasp at permanence, happiness, self, and purity, but they do not know what is truly permanent, truly happy, truly self, and truly pure. For example, a blind man does not know the color of milk and asks another, 'What is the color of milk like?' That person answers, 'Like the color of a conch shell.' Having heard this, the blind man thinks that the color of milk is like the sound of a conch shell. He asks again, 'What is the color of a conch shell like?' He answers, 'Like the color of rice flour.' Having heard this, the blind man thinks that the color of a conch shell is extremely fine and smooth. He asks again, 'What is the color of rice flour like?' That person answers, 'Like the color of snow.' Having heard this, the blind man thinks that the color of rice flour is extremely cold. He asks again, 'What is the color of snow like?' That person answers, 'Like the color of a swan's wing.' Thus, although the blind man has gone through four metaphors, he still cannot know what the true color of milk is like. Those non-Buddhists are also like that, they cannot know permanence, happiness, self, and purity. Son of good family, therefore, there is true truth in the Buddha's teachings, but not in the non-Buddhists.

Chapter Nineteen. Mañjuśrī Kumārabhūta then addressed the Blessed One, saying: "It is most wondrous! The Tathāgata, at the point of complete nirvāṇa, turned the unsurpassed wheel of Dharma, distinctly revealing the true reality." The Blessed One said to Mañjuśrī: "Do you perceive the Tathāgata as entering nirvāṇa? Son of good family, the Tathāgata is truly eternal, abiding, unchanging, and not entering complete nirvāṇa. Son of good family, whoever clings to 'self' in that regard, that is called the Buddha's self, and they will manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. 'Self' is called Dharma, and Dharma is mine. 'Self' is the path, and the path is mine. 'Self' is the Blessed One, and the Blessed One is mine. 'Self' is the Śrāvaka, and the Śrāvaka is mine. What is mine will become the teaching of the Dharma, and others will listen. 'Self' turns the wheel of Dharma, and others cannot. The Tathāgata does not cling in that way; therefore, the Tathāgata's Dharma does not turn the wheel. Son of good family, whoever clings in that way, 'I am the eye. The eye is mine.' It is the same between the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. 'I am form, and form is mine.' Likewise, one should understand extensively regarding Dharma as well. 'I am earth. Earth is mine.' Water, fire, and wind should also be understood in the same way. Son of good family, if someone says, 'Self is called faith. Faith is mine.' 'Self is called great learning. Great learning is mine.' 'Self is called the perfection of generosity, and the perfection of generosity is mine.' 'Self is called the perfection of discipline, and the perfection of discipline is mine.' 'I am the perfection of patience, and the perfection of patience is mine.' 'I am the perfection of diligence, and the perfection of diligence is mine.' 'I am the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of meditation is mine.' 'I am the perfection of wisdom.'
