It is said that "I" exists. For example, if someone goes to a potter's house, even if they don't meet the potter himself, seeing the clay and the wheel, they will surely know that it is the potter's house. The so-called "I" is also like that. As soon as the eye sees a form, it is certain that the "I" exists. If there is no so-called "I", then who would see the form, who would hear the sound, and so on, up to touch and dharma? Furthermore, the "I" exists. How do we know? It can be known from the signs. What are these signs? Breathing, the eyes seeing and smiling, the length of life, experiencing suffering and happiness, anger due to attachment, and these dharmas, etc., are all signs of the so-called "I". Therefore, it is certain that the "I" exists. Furthermore, the existence of the "I" can be known from distinguishing the differences in taste. For example, if someone eats fruit, as soon as they eat it, they know what it tastes like. Therefore, the "I" exists. In addition, it can be known from the way things are done that the "I" exists. Holding a stick, one makes a grasping motion; holding an axe, one makes a chopping motion; holding a vase, one makes a pouring motion; being with a cart, one makes a turning motion. These actions, etc., are also done because they are grasped by the so-called "I". Therefore, it is certain that the "I" exists. Furthermore, from where else can the existence of the so-called "I" be manifested? For example, as soon as a baby is born, it will drink milk, which is due to past habits. Therefore, it is certain that the "I" exists. Furthermore, the "I" exists. From where else can it be manifested? Because gathering and assembling can benefit other sentient beings. For example, pots, clothes, carts, fields, houses, mountains, forests, trees, wool, elephants, horses, cattle, sheep, etc., these things gathered together can produce benefits. The inner five aggregates are also the same. When the eye faculty, etc., gather and assemble, they can benefit the so-called "I". Therefore, the "I" certainly exists. Furthermore, from where else can the existence of the so-called "I" be manifested? In the middle,

Because it is able to obscure and obstruct. For example, if there is a thing, it can be cut off and obscured. If there is no thing, it cannot be obscured. Because there is obscuration and obstruction, it should be known that there is something called "self." Therefore, something called "self" must exist. Furthermore, how does it become apparent that something called "self" exists? Because of friends and non-friends. Can relatives and non-relatives also become friends? Can the correct Dharma and the wrong Dharma also become friends? Can wisdom and non-wisdom also become friends? Can ascetics and non-ascetics also become friends? Brahmins and non-Brahmins, sons and non-sons, day and non-day, night and non-night, self and non-self, etc., these dharmas, because there are friends and non-friends, therefore something called "self" must exist. World-Honored One, the tirthikas also, in this way, through various means, claim that there is permanence, happiness, self, and purity, and they believe that something called permanence, happiness, self, and purity must exist. World-Honored One, because of this reason, the tirthikas also say that there is a true truth. The World-Honored One said: Son of good family, whichever ascetic or Brahmin says that there is permanence, or that there is happiness, or that there is purity, or that there is self, that is not an ascetic, nor is it a Brahmin. Why is that? Because they are deluded in samsara, and they abandon the great teacher who possesses the wisdom of omniscience. Those ascetics and Brahmins are deeply immersed in desire, therefore their virtuous Dharma is weakened. Those tirthikas, although bound by attachment, hatred, and ignorance, are able to endure the pleasure of desire. Those tirthikas, although they know that the fruit of karma is created by me and experienced by me, are unable to abandon non-virtuous dharmas. Those tirthikas are not possessors of the correct Dharma, nor do they live by the correct livelihood. Why is that? Because they do not have the fire of wisdom, and they are unable to purify. Those tirthikas are desire
