That which is not the realm of knowledge of the Buddhas is called excellent wisdom. I have not spoken of this meaning in those sutras. Then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Manjushri Kumara addressed the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, what is the meaning of what is called conventional truth and ultimate truth? Blessed One, does ultimate truth contain conventional truth? Does conventional truth contain ultimate truth? If it does, then it becomes one truth. If it does not, then wouldn't the words spoken by the Tathagata become false? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, conventional truth itself is ultimate truth. The Bodhisattva said: Blessed One, in that case, there are not two truths. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, because of being extremely skillful in means, the two truths are spoken according to the followers of sentient beings. Son of good family, according to speech, there are two aspects: worldly dharma and transcendental dharma. Son of good family, what is known by a transcendental person is called ultimate truth. What is known by a worldly person is called conventional truth. Son of good family, from the aggregation of the five aggregates, the term 'self' is imputed. Inferior sentient beings follow the imputation, and this is called conventional truth. Knowing that there is no self in the aggregates, and also knowing that there is no self beyond the aggregates, this is called transcendence of the world. Knowing the characteristics as they are is called ultimate truth. Furthermore, son of good family, some dharmas have both name and fruit, and some dharmas have name but no fruit. Son of good family, that which has name but no fruit is conventional truth. That which has both name and fruit is ultimate truth. Son of good family, like the self, sentient beings, life, consciousness, seeing, living, powerful one, lord of power, feeling, agent, as well as mirages in hot weather, cities of gandharvas, turtle hair, rabbit horns, wheels formed by whirling firebrands, aggregates, elements, and sense bases are all conventional.

is called the truth. Suffering, origin, cessation, and path are the ultimate truth. Son of the lineage, there are five aspects of worldly phenomena: the world of names, the world of words, the world of bondage, the world of dharma, and the world of attachment. Son of the lineage, what is the world of names? Men, women, pots, clothes, carts, houses, and other things are called the world of names. What is the world of words? One verse of four lines; these verses are called the world of words. What is the world of bondage? Wrapping, gluing, untying knots, piling up, binding, and joining palms are called the world of bondage. What is the world of dharma? When the gandi is struck, the Sangha gathers; when the drum is beaten, the army assembles; when the conch is blown, the time is known; this is called the world of dharma. What is the world of attachment? For example, when one sees a person wearing clothes of different colors from afar, one thinks, "That is a renunciate, not a Brahmin," this is attachment. When one sees a rope with a knot untied, hanging on the shoulder, one thinks, "That is a Brahmin, not a renunciate," this is called the world of attachment. Son of the lineage, these are the five aspects of worldly phenomena. Son of the lineage, if each individual's mind is not inverted with respect to these five aspects of worldly phenomena, and they know them as they truly are, that is the ultimate truth. Furthermore, son of the lineage, speaking, cutting, breaking, and destroying are conventional truths. Not speaking, not cutting, not breaking, and not destroying are ultimate truths. Furthermore, son of the lineage, that which possesses the eight characteristics of suffering is the conventional truth. No birth, no aging, no sickness, no death, no separation from loved ones, no encounter with enemies, no unfulfilled desires, and no five aggregates are the ultimate truth. Furthermore, son of the lineage, for example, a person with many intellectual abilities

When someone is running, they are called a runner. When someone is harvesting crops, they are called a farmer. When someone is cooking food, they are called a cook. When someone is cutting wood, they are called a carpenter. When someone is hammering gold and silver, they are called a goldsmith. In this way, one person can have many names. Dharma is also like that; although ultimately it is one, it has many names. What is born from the union of parents is called conventional truth. What is born from the aggregation of the twelve links of dependent origination is called ultimate truth. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Manjushri Kumara again asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, what is the meaning of what is called ultimate truth? The Bhagavan replied: Son of good family, what is called ultimate truth is the true Dharma. Son of good family, if the Dharma is not true, then it is not ultimate truth. Son of good family, what is called ultimate truth is non-perverted; non-perverted is called ultimate truth. Son of good family, ultimate truth is without falsehood; what is with falsehood cannot be called ultimate truth. Son of good family, ultimate truth is the Great Vehicle; what is not the Great Vehicle cannot be called ultimate truth. Son of good family, ultimate truth is what the Buddha spoke, not what the Mara spoke. What the Mara spoke and what the Buddha did not speak cannot be called ultimate truth. Son of good family, what is called ultimate truth is the one pure path, which is non-dual. Son of good family, possessing permanence, possessing bliss, possessing self, possessing complete purity, this is the meaning of ultimate truth. Manjushri Kumara again asked: Bhagavan, if truth is ultimate truth, then the true Dharma is the emptiness of the Tathagata and the self-nature of the Pratyekabuddha. If this is the case, then there will be no difference between the Tathagata, space itself, and Buddha-nature. The Bhagavan said to Manjushri: If there is suffering, then there is truth.
