Translation: Because the net of doubt is severed, it is also said that manifest enlightenment is attained to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Sometimes it is said that keeping the precepts is the path. That is, it was said to Ananda: Ananda, if someone diligently keeps the precepts, then that person will be able to cross the ocean of samsara. Sometimes it is said that relying on a virtuous friend is the path. That is, it was said to Ananda: If someone relies on a virtuous friend, then the precepts will be completely purified. If sentient beings respect me, they will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Sometimes it is said that cultivating loving-kindness is the path. If loving-kindness is cultivated, then all afflictions will be severed and the state of immovability will be attained. Sometimes it is said that wisdom is the path. That is, in the past, the Blessed One, for the sake of the Bhikshuni Mahaprajapati Gautami, taught the Pulumama Sutra, and the Shravakas also cut off the afflictions of samsara with the sword of wisdom. Sometimes the Tathagata said that giving is the path. That is, in the past, the Buddha, the Blessed One, said to King Prasenajit: Great King, I used to give extensively, and by that cause, by that condition, you should know that I have attained unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Blessed One, if it is said that the Noble Eightfold Path is the Truth of the Path, then wouldn't those words spoken in other Sutras become false? If what is said in those Sutras is not false, then why is it not said in those Sutras that the Noble Eightfold Path is the Truth of the Path? Because it was not said that way, what the Tathagata said in the past seems to be confused. I am certain that the Buddha, the Blessed One, has been free from confusion for a long time. Then the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Light Holder: Good, good! Son of good family, you

It is excellent that you have asked in this way, wishing to know the very profound meaning from the sutras of the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattvas! Son of good family, all those sutras enter into the truth of the path. Son of good family, faith is the path. That is to say, faith is the path, because faith is the root, it becomes a companion on the path to enlightenment, therefore what I have said is without error. Son of good family, the Tathagata is very skilled in immeasurable methods, and for the sake of taming sentient beings, he speaks in various ways like that. Son of good family, for example, a skilled doctor is very skilled in various diseases of sentient beings, and prescribes medicine according to how they are sick, and also shows the incompatibility of medicines, except for water alone. That is also like this: the juice of sour gruel, the juice of sweet wood, the juice of black molasses, the juice of amalaka, the juice of nipaala, the juice of paraahaalaa, cold water, hot water, winter water, and water of Nepali apples, and so on. Son of good family, even though skilled doctors are skilled in the nature of diseases, there are many incompatibilities with medicine, but water is not included there. The Tathagata is also the same, very skilled in methods, with one characteristic of Dharma, according to how sentient beings are, he extensively distinguishes and shows with names and characteristics like that, and sentient beings also practice as they have been shown. Having practiced and made diligent effort, all defilements will be purified, just as when a sick person acts according to the doctor's instructions, the disease is eliminated. Son of good family, again, for example, a person is skilled in all kinds of languages, and dwells among a large crowd, and all the people are completely tormented by thirst, and say, "I am thirsty, I want water!" If that person gives pure cold water separately in the appropriate manner, some of those people say, "I want water!" Some say "paani," some say "udi," some say "salema," some say "sali," some say "pana," some say "nectar," some say "milk." In this way, he speaks the names of water immeasurably to the retinues.

Son of good family, the Tathagata is also like that. With one noble path, he extensively teaches and explains to the Shravakas from the power of faith to the eightfold noble path. Son of good family, it is also like this: for example, a skilled goldsmith can make various kinds of body ornaments at will from just one piece of gold. For example, bracelets, rings, earrings, crests, armlets, and so on, are various and different, but they are not other than gold. Son of good family, the Tathagata is also like that. The Buddha reveals and teaches various methods according to the inclinations of sentient beings from one path, and in between, he teaches that it is one. For example, the enlightenment of all Buddhas is one; it is non-dual. It is also said to be of two kinds: Samatha and Vipassana. It is also said to be of three kinds: view, wisdom, and prajna. It is also said to be of four kinds: the path of seeing, the path of meditation, the path of no more learning, and the path of the Buddha. It is also said to be of five kinds: the path of faith practice, the path of Dharma practice, the path of faith liberation, the path of attainment by sight, and the path of realization by the body. It is also said to be of six kinds: the path of stream-enterer, the path of once-returner, the path of non-returner, the path of Arhat, the path of Pratyekabuddha, and the path of the Buddha. It is also said to be of seven kinds: the branch of mindfulness enlightenment, the branch of Dharma discrimination enlightenment, the branch of diligence enlightenment, the branch of joy enlightenment, the branch of serenity enlightenment, the branch of Samadhi enlightenment, and the branch of equanimity enlightenment. It is also said to be of eight kinds: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right Samadhi. It is also said to be of nine kinds: the eightfold noble path and faith. It is also said to be of ten kinds: the ten powers. It is also said to be of eleven kinds: the ten powers and great loving-kindness.
