Then, noble son, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks like this: sentient beings in hell, the realm of animals, the world of Yama, and even humans and gods, all have the suffering of encountering enemies. For example, when a person is put in prison, captured, bound, put in shackles, fettered, and locked in a wooden cage, they see it as great suffering. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is also like that, realizing that all sentient beings in the five realms of existence also have the great suffering of encountering enemies. Noble son, also, for example, a person is afraid because of an enemy, or afraid of hunger, or afraid of shackles, or afraid of fetters, so they abandon their parents, wife, children, relatives, precious jewels, and fields, and flee far away on a long road. Noble son, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is also like that, fearing samsara and fully practicing the six perfections, thereby entering nirvana. Light Protector, this is what is called the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva's understanding of the suffering of encountering enemies when practicing the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra. Noble son, then how does the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva understand the suffering of not obtaining what one desires when practicing the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra? Desire is all desire. All desires are also of two kinds: desiring virtuous dharmas and desiring non-virtuous dharmas. If one does not obtain virtuous dharmas, one will feel suffering. If one does not abandon non-virtuous dharmas, one will also feel suffering. These are the briefly explained sufferings of the five aggregates. Light Protector, these are called the truth of suffering. Then, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Light Protector said this to the Bhagavan: The meaning of the five aggregates being suffering, as spoken by the Bhagavan, is not like that. Why is that? The Bhagavan once said this to Shakya Mingchen: If form is suffering, then all sentient beings are those who desire form, and since all desire it, it should not be called suffering.

It is also said like that. Furthermore, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "There are also three kinds of feelings: feeling pleasure, feeling pain, and feeling neither pleasure nor pain." Previously, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Whoever diligently practices virtuous Dharma will experience happiness." It is also said. Again, the Blessed One said: "In the continuum of virtue, the six objects of contact can also experience happiness, that is, seeing a good form with the eyes is happiness, then the ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, touching good things is also happiness." The Blessed One spoke in verses: "Those who possess morality are happy, they do not experience physical suffering, even when falling asleep they will be happy, when awake their minds will also be joyful. Taking robes and alms, reading, meditating and explaining, remote borders, monasteries, mountains and gardens, if one dwells there, it is supremely happy. Whoever has compassion for many sentient beings, day and night constantly, and does not harm others, then due to that cause, they are always happy. Having few desires and being content is happiness, likewise, hearing much is happiness. Those Arhats without attachment are also called supremely happy. Bodhisattvas, great beings, reaching the end of the perfections, having done all deeds, are called supremely happy." The meaning of the characteristics of happiness spoken by the Blessed One in other sutras is this. So, if the Blessed One speaks like this, can these meanings be consistent? The Blessed One said to Light Protector: "Good! Very good! Son of good family, it is good that you asked the Tathagata these questions! Son of good family, all sentient beings strongly perceive the ultimate suffering as happiness, therefore, this explanation of the characteristics of suffering is no different from the previous one." Then, Bodhisattva Light Protector again said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, as the Blessed One previously said, if one also generates the perception of happiness in the ultimate suffering, then, the ultimate birth, the ultimate aging, the ultimate sickness, the ultimate death, and separation from loved ones
