etc., are of no help. A son of good family is also like that; if he becomes withered with age, he will not be of help in all the tasks to be done. Ārakṣita, furthermore, it is like this, for example, a tree growing on a cliff eaten away by water will inevitably fall as soon as a strong wind rises. A son of good family is also like that; the cliff of old age is close to the precipice, and when the wind of death rises, he will not last long. Ārakṣita, furthermore, it is like this, for example, if the axle of a cart breaks, it cannot bear a heavy load. A son of good family who is old is also like that; he cannot hold all the virtuous dharmas. Ārakṣita, furthermore, it is like this, for example, a small, weak calf is despised by everyone. A son of good family who is old is also like that; he is despised by everyone. Ārakṣita, through these examples, and through countless other examples, one should recognize that old age is a great suffering. Ārakṣita, these are the realizations of the suffering of old age when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices the Mahāyāna Nirvāṇa Sūtra. Ārakṣita, how does a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva realize the suffering of sickness when practicing the Mahāyāna Nirvāṇa Sūtra? Sickness is that which destroys all things of happiness, just as when hail falls, it destroys all the crops and renders them useless. Ārakṣita, furthermore, it is like this, for example, if a person has a blood feud enemy, he will constantly grieve and be afraid. A son of good family, all sentient beings are also like that; they are always afraid and grieve because of the suffering of sickness. Ārakṣita, furthermore, it is like this, for example, if there is a handsome man, the queen of the king, out of desire, seduces him and sleeps with him. Then, the king discovers it, seizes him, gouges out one eye, cuts off one ear, and cuts off one hand. At that time, his appearance is more damaged than before, and no one will like him. A son of good family, a person is also like that; although he possesses the limbs of the body, eyes, and ears, if he is afflicted by the suffering of sickness, everyone will dislike him. Ārakṣita, furthermore, it is like this

For example, aquatic trees, bamboo, reeds, and mules die once they bear fruit or have offspring. Similarly, son of good family, so it is with humans; once they become ill, they die. Son of good family, there are other examples as well. For instance, the Chakravartin king is always followed by the minister in charge of the army who goes before him. When the king of fish, the king of bees, the king of conches, the king of herds, and the leader of merchants go first, the others follow them without separating. Son of good family, the dying Chakravartin king is also like that; he always follows the minister who is constantly ill, never separating. Just as fish, bees, conches, herds, and merchants follow the king who is ill, so too the retinue of death always follows, constantly following and never separating. Light Protector, the causes and conditions for illness are as follows: suffering, strife, extreme sorrow, lamentation, causing discomfort to body and mind, which can also be described as being threatened by fierce enemies, or as a torn bag, or as a collapsed bridge, or as the loss of correct mindfulness. Furthermore, it also makes the good complexion of youth, strength, and well-being become unpleasant. Lack of shame and embarrassment causes the body and mind to burn and be consumed. Through these examples and countless immeasurable other examples shown, one should recognize that the suffering of illness is a great suffering. Light Protector, this is what is called the bodhisattva mahasattva's realization of the suffering of illness when practicing the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra. Light Protector, how does a bodhisattva mahasattva realize the suffering of death when practicing the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra? It is like this: death means burning and destroying. Light Protector, for example, when the eon of fire occurs, everything except the second dhyana is burned. Son of good family, the mind of death also destroys everything. The bodhisattva mahasattva abides in the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra
