Therefore, it should be recognized that birth without (nothingness) is a great suffering. O Light-increaser, thus should a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva understand the suffering of birth as described in the Great Vehicle's Mahaparinirvana Sutra. O Light-increaser, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva understand the suffering of old age as described in the Great Vehicle's Mahaparinirvana Sutra? What is called old age is repulsive and nauseating, robbing one of bravery and strength, making memory, diligence, retention, youth, extreme happiness, pride, arrogance, and the enjoyment of pleasure at will all unsuitable. Conversely, it leads to laziness, great indolence, and being despised by others. O Light-increaser, it is like a pond filled with lotuses, their petals blooming, their vibrant colors pleasing to all and desired. If hail falls, it destroys everything, making it unsuitable. Son of good family, old age is also like that, making the beauty of youth unsuitable. O Light-increaser, it is also like a king who has a wise minister, intelligent and skilled in the ways of enemies. If another small kingdom is jealous and disobedient, the king commands the minister: Seize that enemy kingdom. And he leads them back. Old age is also like that, seizing youth and offering it to the Lord of Death. O Light-increaser, it is also like a chariot whose axle is broken, making it unusable. Old age is also like that, good for nothing. O Light-increaser, it is also like a wealthy householder who has a house full of gold, silver, vaidurya, coral, asmagarbha, and musaragarbha. If thieves or many barbarians come, they steal everything, leaving the house empty. Son of good family, the beauty of youth is also like that, always being stolen and plundered by the enemy of old age. Son of good family, it is also like a poor person who is attached to fine food and soft clothes, always desiring but never obtaining them. Son of good family, old age is also like that, the happiness of the five desires.

Although one desires to enjoy as one pleases, it is not possible. O Kaśyapa, furthermore, consider this example: a turtle dwelling on dry land constantly remembers water in its mind. Noble son, humans are also like that; having become completely dried up by old age, they constantly remember in their minds the pleasures of the five desires of youth. Noble son, furthermore, consider this example: a lotus flower that blooms in autumn is desired by all and is pleasing to the mind. Having become old and yellow, it is not desired by all. Noble son, the beautiful appearance of youth is also like that; it is desired and rejoiced by all, but when it becomes old, it is displeasing to all and not desired. O Kaśyapa, furthermore, consider this example: the pulp of a sugarcane that has been squeezed is without taste. Noble son, the appearance of youth is also like that; when it is covered by old age and decay, the taste of renunciation, the taste of reading and reciting, and the taste of meditation—these three tastes will disappear. O Kaśyapa, furthermore, consider this example: a waxing moon is very bright and clear at night, but not during the day. Noble son, humans are also like that; in youth, they are good and beautiful, but in old age, they are dry and emaciated. O Kaśyapa, furthermore, consider this example: a king who rules with the true Dharma, is without deceit, possesses compassion, and is endowed with generosity, if he is attacked by the armies of another country and wanders, having gone to another country, all feel compassion for him, saying this: The great king formerly ruled with the true Dharma, and there was not one who was unhappy; why has he now become a wanderer? Noble son, humans are also like that; having declined due to old age, they long for what they did in their youth. O Kaśyapa, furthermore, consider this example: the essence of an oil lamp depends on butter; when the butter is exhausted, it will not last long. Noble son, humans are also like that; they depend on youth. When youth is exhausted, the essence of old age will not last long. Noble son, furthermore, consider this example: a dried-up riverbed is for humans and non-humans, birds and wild animals.
