So! O Blessed One, for the sake of compassion, please explain the causes and conditions for this. Why is this so? For example, when the sons of householders learn from a teacher, are they not under the teacher's control? If they are under the teacher's control, the purpose of learning cannot be achieved. If they are not under the teacher's control, it also cannot be achieved. Even if they are under my control, learning also cannot be achieved. Therefore, what the Thus-Gone One has said is with remainder. O Blessed One, furthermore, consider this: for example, those princes who do not learn anything and do not know anything are indeed under my control. However, because they are foolish and ignorant, they are always suffering. Thus, even if one says that the prince is under my control, there is no accomplished meaning. Even if one says that he is under the control of others, there is no accomplished meaning. Therefore, this meaning spoken by the Blessed One is with remainder. Therefore, it is not right to say that all who are under the control of others necessarily suffer, nor is it right to say that all who are under my control are necessarily happy. To say that all who are arrogant with pride are wrathful and violent is also with remainder. O Blessed One, for example, women full of desire, because of pride, go forth and, if they engage in learning, they completely protect their vows and their conduct is extremely restrained. They diligently ensure that their senses are not distracted. Therefore, it is not right to say that all afflictions of pride are necessarily wrathful and violent. Similarly, to say that all virtuous deeds are endowed with loving-kindness and compassion is also with remainder. For example, if someone commits a defeat, but does not abandon the Dharma robes, and their external conduct is extremely restrained, but when they see Dharma protectors, they dislike them and abandon them. At that time, having passed away, they will fall into the hell realms. If a monk commits a defeat, those Dharma protectors will expel him and cause him to return to lay life. Therefore, it is not right to say that all virtuous deeds are necessarily endowed with loving-kindness. Then, the Blessed One spoke to Manjushri: Because there are causes and conditions, the Thus-Gone One speaks in this way about these meanings with remainder.

Thus it was spoken. Furthermore, the Blessed One spoke in this way because there were causes and conditions. Here in Rajagriha, a woman named 'Very Virtuous' came to me (Ananda) on the way to her parents' house, took refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and said: All women are powerless and without authority, and all men are unimpeded in their power. At that time, the Blessed One understood the thoughts of that woman, and therefore spoke these verses. Manjushri, well done! Well done! It is excellent that you ask the Tathagata such questions for the sake of all sentient beings. Then, Manjushri asked in verse: All sentient beings rely on food and drink. All those with power have no jealousy in their minds. All are subject to the suffering of disease due to food and drink. Those whose conduct is perfectly pure will experience great bliss. Therefore, Blessed One, is not this acceptance of alms and offerings from Cunda a humility for the Tathagata? To this, the Blessed One replied to Manjushri in verse: All sentient beings do not depend on food and drink. All those with power are not without jealousy. All are not tormented by disease due to the influence of food. All those whose conduct is pure do not all experience bliss. Manjushri, if you were to become ill, then it would be reasonable for me to become ill as well. Why is that? Because the Arhats, the Pratyekabuddhas, the Bodhisattvas, and the Tathagatas do not actually eat anything when they are ill. In order to tame others, they show that they have accepted the offerings of countless ordinary people. This is also in order to perfect the paramitas of those offerings, and to liberate sentient beings from hell, the animal realm, and the world of Yama. If someone thinks that the Tathagata also practiced extremely difficult austerities for six years, and his body became very weak, then that is not the case.
