These were said considering these things. Therefore, because of concern for life, I pretended to be ill and asked Manjushri to teach the Dharma to the fourfold assembly. Odsung, In truth, the Tathagata, the perfectly complete Buddha, does not get sick, nor does he lie down on his right side, and ultimately he does not completely pass away into nirvana. Odsung, this great complete passing into nirvana is the very profound samadhi of the Buddhas, and it is not the realm of practice for shravakas and pratyekabuddhas. Odsung, you asked me before, why does the Tathagata sleep and not wake up? And does not eat? And does not teach the retinue and show the activities of livelihood and so on? Odsung, it is like this: in the sky itself, there is no sitting or standing. There is no desire for food and drink. There is no teaching of the retinue and showing of the activities of livelihood. There is no coming, going, birth, cessation, aging, youth, arising, disappearing, speaking, walking, liberation, and bondage. There is no saying "I", no saying "other". There is no liberation of "I", and no liberation of "other". It is neither happiness nor suffering. Son of lineage, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is also like that, like the sky. How could there be suffering from illness? Odsung, in the world, the diseases of three kinds of people are very difficult to cure. What are they? Those who slander the Great Vehicle, those who commit the five inexpiable sins, and those who have wrong views. These three kinds of diseases are very difficult to cure in the world, and shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas cannot cure them either. Son of lineage, for example, a disease that is certain to lead to death is difficult to cure. Whether there is a nurse and a wish-fulfilling medicine, or whether there is no nurse and no wish-fulfilling medicine, that disease cannot be cured, so that person will die without being devoured by demons. Son of lineage, those three kinds of people are also like that. Even if shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, or bodhisattvas teach the Dharma or do not teach the Dharma, they will not generate the unsurpassed, perfectly complete bodhicitta, because they do not generate bodhicitta by not hearing the Dharma.

will become the cause of not being able to plant the unsurpassed perfect and complete Bodhi mind. O Keeper of Light, for example, if one can cure diseases, and has nursing care and wish-fulfilling medicine, one will live. If one does not have these three conditions, one will not live. The Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are also the same as this. If one hears the Dharma from the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, one will immediately generate the unsurpassed perfect and complete Bodhi mind. If one does not hear the Dharma, one will not generate the Bodhi mind. O Keeper of Light, for example, a sick person, even if he has nursing care and wish-fulfilling medicine, or does not have nursing care and wish-fulfilling medicine, there is a possibility of living. Similarly, there is one kind of person who is also like this. Even if he meets a Hearer, or does not meet a Hearer, even if he meets a Solitary Buddha, or does not meet a Solitary Buddha, even if he meets a Bodhisattva, or does not meet a Bodhisattva, even if he meets a Tathagata, or does not meet a Tathagata, even if he hears the Dharma, or does not hear the Dharma, there is a possibility of attaining unsurpassed perfect and complete Bodhi. For example, if someone, for himself, or for others, or because of fear, or for fame and gain, or for deception, or for deceiving others, writes, copies, upholds, recites, chants, respectfully makes offerings to this Great Nirvana Sutra, or explains it to others. O Keeper of Light, these five kinds of people act as if they are defiling the Great Vehicle Great Nirvana Sutra, and are not Tathagatas. What are these five? For example, having cut off the three kinds of afflictions, having obtained the fruit of entering the stream, one will no longer be born in the realms of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts, and will return seven times in the realms of gods and humans, cutting off all suffering and entering Nirvana. O Keeper of Light, this is called a person who acts with defilement. In the future, after eighty thousand kalpas have passed, un-

O Good Guardian, after cutting off the last three afflictions, greed, hatred, and delusion become weak, and one obtains the fruit of once-returner. Having returned to this world once, one cuts off all suffering and enters Nirvana. This is called the two kinds of flawed conduct of the Good Guardian. After sixty thousand kalpas have passed, one will awaken to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. O Good Guardian, the third kind of person cuts off the last five afflictions and obtains the fruit of non-returner. Not returning again, one cuts off all suffering and enters Nirvana. This is called the three kinds of flawed conduct. After forty thousand kalpas have passed, one will awaken to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. O Good Guardian, the fourth kind of person completely cuts off greed, hatred, and delusion, and obtains the fruit of Arhat. All remaining afflictions are extinguished without remainder, and one enters Nirvana. This is not like practicing alone like a rhinoceros. This is called the four kinds of flawed conduct. After twenty thousand kalpas have passed, one will awaken to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. O Good Guardian, the fifth kind of person also completely cuts off greed, hatred, and delusion, and obtains the fruit of Pratyekabuddha. All remaining afflictions are extinguished without remainder, and one enters Nirvana. Practicing alone like a rhinoceros, this is called the five kinds of flawed conduct. After ten thousand kalpas have passed, one will awaken to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. O Good Guardian, these are called the five kinds of people with flawed conduct, and they are not Tathagatas. From the Sutra of the Great Nirvana, the fifth chapter called "The Chapter of Universal Questions by the Great Assembly." Fifth Chapter: The Chapter of Universal Questions by the Great Assembly.
