There was a famine and war broke out. A child was born in a place of worship in a foreign land. Later, I heard news that the war in my hometown had subsided and the harvest was very good. So, I carried the child and returned to my hometown. During that time, a great river flooded. Because I was carrying the child, I couldn't cross the river. So, she thought: It would be better for us mother and child to die together. I cannot abandon the child and cross the river alone. Thinking this way, she did not cross the river, and the mother and child drowned in the river. As soon as they died, they were reborn in the heavenly realm as gods. This was also because she loved the child and wanted to save the child from the water. Although that woman was naturally evil and fierce, because she thought of loving the child, she was reborn in the heavenly realm as a god. Even those who violate the four root vows and commit the five heinous crimes, if they generate the mind to protect and defend the Dharma, it is the same as this. Although they have done unwholesome deeds in the past, because they have protected the Dharma, they will become the supreme field of merit in the world. In this way, protecting and defending the Dharma has immeasurable and excellent results. The Venerable also reported: World Honored One, those who have wrong views are very regretful and ashamed, and they are also respectful to the Three Jewels. If we make offerings and praises to them, and give them alms, will we receive great rewards? The World Honored One taught: Noble son, do not say such things. Noble son, for example, a person eats a mango and then throws the seed on the ground. He thinks: There must still be sweetness in the seed, so he breaks the seed and tastes it. As a result, it is very bitter, and he regrets it. Fearing that the mango tree will become extinct, he buries the broken seed in the ground. In order to make it grow, he regularly pours ghee and milk, etc., and takes care of it very carefully. Do you think it will grow? He replied: No, World Honored One. The World Honored One said: Even if the supreme nectar rain falls from the sky, it will not grow. Noble son, those who have wrong views are also like this. If all the roots of virtue are burned, then what can be relied upon to eliminate sins? Noble son, if a virtuous mind arises.

Therefore, one should not call them those with wrong views. Son of good family, the ripening fruits of all giving are not without distinction. Why is that? Because there is a distinction between the ripening fruit of giving to the Hearers and giving to the Solitary Buddhas. Giving only to the Tathagata will result in obtaining the unsurpassed fruit. Therefore, all giving is not without distinction. The venerable one further asked: For what reason did the Tathagata speak this verse? The Blessed One told the venerable one: I spoke this verse not without cause and condition. In the past, in this city of Rajagriha, there was a very unfaithful layperson who gave alms to naked heretics and then asked me about the meaning of giving. Because of that cause and that condition, I spoke those verses. Furthermore, I spoke these verses in consideration of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, in order to show the essence of what was said. What is the meaning of this verse? The term "all" also refers to all of one aspect. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, who has become the chief of men, will also completely gather and give what is needed to those who keep the precepts. Those with bad morality are completely abandoned like barren wastelands or weeds. Furthermore, son of good family, I have also spoken these verses in the past: All the streams of rivers are certainly crooked. All that belongs to the forest is certainly trees without doubt. All women mentioned are certainly full of deceit. All those with power certainly possess wealth without doubt. Then, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, who had become the youth Manjushri, rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and spoke this verse: All the streams of rivers are certainly not crooked. All that belongs to the forest is certainly not all trees. All women mentioned are certainly not all deceitful. Power
