After that, worms and blood came out of his buttocks. Seeing the king in that condition, he was very frightened and praised the doctor, saying, "Good! Good! I didn't listen to you before, but now you have done a great benefit to my body." Saying this, he revered the doctor as if he were his parents. The Mahayana sutra, the Great Nirvana Sutra, is also the same. It pacifies all the afflictions of any sentient being, whether they have desires or not. Any sentient being who dreams of this sutra in a dream and makes offerings and reverence to it is like a great king revering a learned doctor. Just as a learned doctor does not heal someone who is destined to die, the Great Nirvana Sutra is also the same; it will not heal those with wrong views. Son of good family, there is another example: a learned doctor who is skilled in the eight branches of knowledge can heal all diseases, but cannot heal a disease that is destined to die. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are also the same. They can heal all the faults of sentient beings' existence, but they cannot heal those with wrong views, just like someone who is destined to die. Son of good family, there is another example: a learned doctor who is skilled in the eight branches of knowledge, who has mastered all medicine and the eight branches of knowledge, and who understands everything, first shows his son all the medicines that come from water, from dry land, and from mountains. After knowing those, he gradually shows the eight branches of knowledge. Then, he shows the secret essence that is not those. The Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, is also the same. First, he shows the monks, who are like his sons, the method of removing all afflictions, and makes them strive for the concept of purifying the body and having no essence. That is like showing water, dry land, and cliffs. "Water" means that the body experiences suffering, just like a bubble in water. "Dry land" means that this body has no essence, just like a dry tree. "Cliff" means that there is no self in afflictions.

Showing the meditation on the concept of no-self, therefore it is said that the body is without self. In this way, the Tathagata gradually taught the nine sutras to the attendants, causing them to realize them, and then afterwards taught the essence of the Tathagata. For the sake of those who are like sons, it is said that the Tathagata is eternal. In this way, the Tathagata taught the Mahayana sutra, the Nirvana Sutra, and all sentient beings who generate or do not generate bodhicitta will become the cause of enlightenment, except for those with wrong views. Son of good family, this great Mahayana sutra, the Great Nirvana, is immeasurable and boundless, inconceivable. Therefore, this is like the most excellent, supreme, and chief of skilled physicians, the king of all sutras. Son of good family, again, for example, a great ship ferries from this shore of the ocean to the other shore, and also ferries from the other shore to this shore. The Tathagata, the perfectly complete Buddha, is also the same. If one enters the great Nirvana, the precious ship, one will completely liberate sentient beings, and wherever they need to go, one will liberate them to that place and cause them to see the body of the Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata is like the captain of a liberating ship. For example, if a ship is intact, beings will cross the ocean, and the Tathagata constantly acts for the benefit of liberating many sentient beings, and it is also the same. Thirteenth Chapter Son of good family, again, for example, if those who board a great ship to cross the ocean, if they encounter wind, they will reach the other shore of immeasurable yojanas in an instant. If they do not encounter wind, even if they stay for countless years, they will not be able to leave their place. If the ship breaks, they will sink into the water and die. If sentient beings board the ship of karma and enter the great ocean of the cycle of ignorance, it is also the same. If they encounter the fierce wind of the great Nirvana, they will quickly reach unsurpassed enlightenment. If they do not encounter it, they will wander in samsara for countless kalpas. If

Sentient beings will fall into the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. Son of good family, here is another example: Imagine people who have boarded a ship on the great ocean and have spent a long time without wind. They would think, "We will surely die of starvation." While they are thinking this, if they encounter a strong wind and reach the other side of the ocean as they wish, they would say, "The wind has greatly satisfied us. We have also been safely freed from the obstacles of the ocean." Sentient beings wander for a long time in the ocean of samsara, tormented by suffering. If they do not encounter the great wind of nirvana, they will think, "We will surely fall into the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals." While they are thinking this, if they encounter the great wind of nirvana and are placed in the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment as they wish, they will initially realize that this is correct. They will give rise to a wondrous and marvelous perception and say, "I have never heard of such a secret essence of the Tathagata before." Saying this, they will develop a completely pure mind of faith in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra. Son of good family, here is another example: When a snake sheds its skin, is that called death? Answer: No, it is not. Lord, son of good family, the Tathagata is also like that. How can it be said that the Tathagata is impermanent when he shows the abandonment of his body through skillful means? Answer: No, it cannot. Lord, the Tathagata's abandonment of his body in this Jambudvipa through skillful means is like a snake shedding its skin. Therefore, the Tathagata is called permanent and abiding. Son of good family, here is another example: A skilled goldsmith skillfully hammers gold into various kinds of utensils as he wishes. The Tathagata is also like that. He manifests various kinds of form bodies in the twenty-five realms of existence, liberating individual ordinary beings from samsara. Therefore, the Tathagata is called immeasurable in body. Although he shows various kinds of bodies in this way, he is permanent and abiding.
