Fourth, The Chapter on the Essence of the Thus-Gone. Fourth, The Chapter on the Essence of the Thus-Gone. Then, the Blessed One spoke to Light Protector, saying: "Son of good family, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, in order to reveal and demonstrate the great Nirvana, should be skilled in these four characteristics. What are the four? Acting properly oneself, subduing others properly, answering questions as they are asked, and being skilled in dependent origination. Among them, what is acting properly oneself? The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, having seen and spoken of dependent origination, for example, if a monk sees a great pile of fire, he thinks, 'I would rather enter this great pile of fire and be burned, than to falsely accuse the twelve scriptures spoken by the Thus-Gone One and the profound essence of his intention, saying that this is spoken by the evil demon.' Likewise, to the extent that one says that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are impermanent, one deceives oneself and also deceives others. Even if one's tongue is cut off by a sharp sword, I would rather do that than say that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are impermanent. One should not believe those who say such things, and one should generate a mind of compassion towards those who say such things. Regarding the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha as inconceivable, and regarding one's own body as a pile of fire, this is called acting properly oneself. Then, how does one properly subdue others? When the Blessed One was teaching the Dharma, a woman holding a nursing child came to where the Blessed One was, prostrated at the feet of the Buddha, thinking of asking the Buddha, and then sat down on one side. At that time, the Blessed One, knowing full well, spoke to the woman, saying: 'Because you love your child, you have expressed a lot of milk, have you come to test whether I will accept it or not?' Then, that woman said to the Blessed One: 'It's amazing! Blessed One, you know what I am thinking in my heart. Is the milk I offer much or little? Please show me, Blessed One.' Blessed One, I...

Because now this child eats butter but does not digest it, I am afraid that it will become an obstacle to life, please Tathagata show me. The Blessed One said: The butter eaten by your child will be digested immediately and become the essence of life and body. When the woman heard these words, she was very happy and said again: The Blessed One speaks the truth, I am very happy. The Blessed One, in order to subdue sentient beings, distinguished between digestion and non-digestion and said, and also said that all dharmas are selfless and impermanent, which is very good. If the Blessed One had said permanence first, these subdued retinues would have said: This dharma is the same as that of the heretics, and they would have abandoned it. The Blessed One said to the woman: When your child is born and can run, he can digest food that is difficult to digest, but it is not enough to rely on the butter given before. My Shravaka attendant is also like your little son, unable to digest the Dharma of permanence. Therefore, I first spoke of suffering and impermanence, etc. My Shravaka attendant, who has merits and is able to diligently practice the Mahayana Sutras, I have shown them the six flavors of this Sutra. What are the six flavors? Suffering is like sour taste. Impermanence is like salty taste. Selflessness is like astringent taste. Happiness is like sweet taste. Self is like spicy taste. Permanence is like bitter taste. There are three flavors in the world: impermanence, selflessness, and no happiness. Afflictions are like trees, wisdom is like flames, and by their cause and condition, they become the food of Nirvana, which is permanence, happiness, self, and purity. Those who become attendants like that taste. Again, he said to the woman: If you go elsewhere for the sake of benefit, drive your bad son out of the house and give the treasure of jewels to the virtuous son. The woman reported: Blessed One, as the noble one said, jewels

Treasures are shown to virtuous sons, but not to bad sons. The Blessed One said: I am also the same. When about to pass into complete nirvana, the Thus-Gone One, contemplating, said that the treasure of the unsurpassed Dharma is not shown to the close attendants of the Hearers, just as you do not show the treasure of jewels to a bad son. The instructions and entrustment to the Bodhisattvas are like you entrusting the treasure of jewels to a virtuous son. Why is that? Because the close attendants of the Hearers have the perception of birth and death, thinking that the Buddha, the Blessed One, has truly passed into nirvana, but I have not truly passed into nirvana. For example, if you have gone a long way and before you return, your bad son says that you are dead even though you are not dead, it is like that. The Bodhisattvas say that the Thus-Gone One is eternal, unchanging, and immutable, just as your virtuous son says that you are not dead. Therefore, I entrust the treasure of the unsurpassed Dharma, spoken with contemplation, to the Bodhisattvas. Son of good family, any sentient being who believes that the Buddha is eternal, abiding, unchanging, and immutable, should know that the Buddha dwells in that very place, and those are called those who truly tame others. Then, how does one answer as asked? If a person says to the Buddha, the Blessed One, 'Even if I do not give away wealth or possessions, I will still be known as a great benefactor,' the Blessed One would say to them: 'To ascetics and Brahmins, and others who have few desires and are content, who do not carry unexamined utensils, etc., not giving male and female servants, and hired people, giving women to those who practice celibacy, giving meat and alcohol to those who abstain from meat and alcohol, giving food to those who do not eat after noon, giving flowers and incense to those who do not take flowers and incense, etc., the name of generosity will also be widely known, and wealth and possessions will not be diminished in the slightest. These are answering as asked.' Then, the Bodhi
