This is the supreme Mahayana sutra collection, spoken by the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Noble son, it is like this: when the sky above is covered with rain clouds and heavy rain falls, it falls even on dry wood, rocks, and high mountains where water cannot penetrate. All depressions and low-lying areas are completely filled with water, which becomes beneficial for countless sentient beings. The Great Nirvana Sutra is also similar: although the rain of the great Dharma falls on all sentient beings, only those with wrong views have no place for the arising of the mind of enlightenment. Noble son, it is like a seed that has been destroyed: even if it is completely moistened by rain for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, it will not sprout because there is no place for it to grow. Those with wrong views are also like this: even if they hear the supreme Great Nirvana Sutra, the sprout of the mind of enlightenment will not grow because there is no place for it to grow. Why is that? Because that person has destroyed all roots of virtue and has become like a destroyed seed, so the root and sprout of enlightenment do not grow. Noble son, Furthermore, it is like this: if a precious jewel like a water-clarifying gem is placed in muddy water, the power of the jewel will make the water clear, but if it is placed in mud, it will not become clear. The supreme Great Nirvana Sutra is also similar: if it is placed in the minds of sentient beings who have committed the five inexpiable sins and incurred the four root downfalls, which are like muddy water, it can become pure and the mind of enlightenment may arise. However, if it is placed in the minds of those with wrong views, who are like mud, even if it is left there for hundreds of thousands of years, it will not become pure, nor is it possible for the mind of enlightenment to arise. Why is that? Because those with wrong views have destroyed all roots of virtue and are therefore not suitable vessels. If that person hears or upholds this Great Nirvana Sutra for hundreds of thousands of years, they will still not be able to generate the mind of enlightenment. Why is that? Because they have no virtuous mind. Noble son, it is also like this: among medicinal trees, the one called the king of medicines is the best and most excellent of all medicines. If it is combined with silk or honey,

Mixed with oil? Mixed with ghee? Mixed with water? Mixed with milk? Smear with flour? Made into pills? Applied to the wound? Smoked with fragrance? Applied to the eyes? Seen it? Just carrying it can pacify all the diseases of sentient beings. However, would that medicinal tree think like this? If sentient beings take my roots, will they think they are people who cut leaves? If they cut leaves, will they think they are people who take roots? If they take the trunk, will they think they are people who peel the bark? If they peel the bark, will they think they are people who cut the trunk? It doesn't think like that. Even if it doesn't think like that, it can still eliminate all the suffering of diseases of sentient beings. Son of good family, this supreme Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra is also similar to this, it can eliminate the four defeats of all sentient beings, the five heinous crimes, and all the non-virtuous deeds, both external and internal. Those who have not generated the mind of Bodhi will also generate the mind of Bodhi by the power of this Sutra. What is the reason for that? This Sutra is like a king among all Sutras, just like a king of medicine among medicines. Whether someone is diligent in this Great Nirvana Sutra or not, as long as they hear the name of this Sutra, and immediately after hearing it, generate faith and trust, they can eliminate all the diseases of afflictions, but those with wrong views cannot abide in the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Just like the king of medicine can heal all diseases, but cannot prevent the arrival of the destined time of death. Son of good family, here is another example, for example, if those who have wounds on their hands touch poison, the poison will enter the body. Those without wounds, even if they touch poison, it will not enter the body. Those with wrong views are also like this, because they do not have the seed of Bodhi, it is like touching poison without a wound, the poison will not enter the body. A wound refers to the seed of unsurpassed Bodhi, poison refers to medicine like the ultimate truth, and without a wound refers to those with wrong views. Son of good family, here is another example, for example, a diamond cannot be destroyed by anything. It can pierce and cut everything, but it will be blocked by the shell of a turtle and the horn of a goat. This Great Nirvana Sutra is also similar to this.
