In the world of children, it is also shown that there are parents, so each individual thinks that the Tathagata has appeared in Jambudvipa. In Jambudvipa, nirvana is also shown. Although the Tathagata does not actually pass into nirvana, sentient beings think that the Tathagata has passed into nirvana, just like the analogy of the setting moon. Son of the lineage, the Tathagata himself does not actually have birth and cessation, but shows birth and cessation in order to tame sentient beings. Son of the lineage, for example, the moon appears full in these realms, but in other realms it appears as half. If it appears as half in this realm, it appears as full in other realms. When the people of Jambudvipa see the moon rising for the first time, they say it is the first day, and they generate the concept of the moon rising. When they see the moon waxing and full, they say it is the fifteenth day, and they generate the concept of the moon being full. In reality, the moon itself does not have birth and waning, but due to the influence of Mount Sumeru, there is birth and waning. Son of the lineage, the Tathagata is also like this. In this Jambudvipa, birth is shown first, and nirvana is also shown. Showing birth first is like the rising moon. Everyone thinks that when the first young person is born and takes seven steps, it is like the moon on the second day. Then, when it is shown that the young person begins to study, it is like the moon on the third day. When ordination is shown, it is like the moon on the eighth day. When the great light of wisdom is emitted and countless sentient beings and many demons are subdued, it is like the full moon on the fifteenth day. Furthermore, when nirvana is shown, adorned with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks, it is like the waning moon. Therefore, the perceptions of sentient beings are different. Some see a half-waned moon, some see a full moon, and some see a waning moon. In reality, the nature of the moon does not have birth and waning, but is always full and complete. The Tathagata is also like this, therefore he is called constant, abiding, and unchanging. Son of the lineage, there is also this, for example, the moon...

For example, in any place, whether it be a city, town, mountain, village, river, well, pond, basin, the moon appears everywhere. Sentient beings, whether they go one yojana or a hundred thousand yojanas, see the moon in the same way. To this, foolish people think: 'When I am at home, I see this moon, and now I come to this village temple and see it again. Is this the same moon I saw before, or not?' They also measure the size of the moon. Some say, 'It is only as big as a copper mirror.' Some say, 'It is only as big as a chariot wheel.' Some say, 'It is forty-nine yojanas.' Although everyone sees the moonlight, some feel that the moon is round like a golden plate. In this way, although the nature of the moon is one, due to the differences in sentient beings, various different perceptions arise. Son of the lineage, the Tathagata is also like this. After appearing in the world, some gods and humans think: 'The Tathagata is only in front of my eyes.' Some sentient beings also think: 'The Tathagata only appears in front of my eyes.' Some deaf and mute sentient beings think: 'Is the Tathagata also deaf or mute?' Sentient beings with various different languages also think that the Tathagata speaks in my language. Each one thinks that the Tathagata only comes to my house and only accepts my offerings. Some sentient beings see the body of the Tathagata as immeasurable and vast, some see the body of the Tathagata as very small, some see the image of the Tathagata as a Shravaka, and some see the image of the Tathagata as a Pratyekabuddha. Some non-Buddhists think: 'The Tathagata has renounced the world through my teachings and has begun to learn.' Some sentient beings think: 'The Tathagata has come into the world only for me.' The true nature of the Tathagata is like the moon, it is the Dharmakaya, the unborn body, the body of skillful means, following the world, it is the karma of the past.
