If asked: In Nirvana, there is no such thing as sorrow, nor is there joy. Then why ascend the platform of wisdom, like reaching the summit of a mountain, and be able to see all sentient beings? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, the platform of wisdom refers to Nirvana. The one without sorrow is the Tathagata, and the one with sorrow is the ordinary, foolish person. Ordinary, foolish people have sorrow, and the Tathagata is without sorrow. The summit of Mount Meru refers to complete liberation. To strive with diligence is like Mount Meru, unmoving and unshakable. Earth refers to things that are conditioned by causes, and ordinary, foolish people dwell on that earth, discriminating about things that are conditioned. Wise and intelligent ones have awakened to enlightenment, having abandoned existence, and because of permanence, they are called Tathagatas. The Tathagata is said to have sorrow because of compassion for the countless beings who are tormented by the suffering of samsara. The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: Blessed One, if the Tathagata has sorrow, then he cannot be called perfectly and completely enlightened. The Blessed One said to Light Protector: That is not without meaning, for those sentient beings who need to be tamed, the Tathagata shows birth in those places. Although birth is shown, there is actually no real birth. Therefore, the Tathagata is of the nature of permanence, like the Kalandaka bird and the crane. Son of good family, there is also this example: For example, when people see the moon obscured by clouds and disappearing, they think that the moon has set, but in reality, the moon has not set. When the moon rises in another place, the sentient beings there think that the moon has risen, but in reality, the moon has not risen. Why is that? Because Mount Meru obscures it, making it invisible. There is no such thing as the moon rising or setting. The Tathagata, the perfectly and completely enlightened one, is also like that, appearing to pass away in the three-thousand-great-thousand world system,
