Son of lineage, however many different ways there are of speaking, such as knowledge-mantras and treatises that excel beyond words, and all things such as letters, these are all taught by the Buddha, and not taught by the tirthikas. Then, the bodhisattva Light Protector said this to the Bhagavan: How did the Thus-Gone One teach the mothers of letters? The Bhagavan said: Son of lineage, previously teaching half of the mothers of letters, one will come to hold treatises, knowledge-mantras, that which excels beyond words, and sounds and so forth. When inferior children have been taught the mothers of letters, thereafter they will come to know dharma and non-dharma and so forth. Again, the bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Bhagavan: What is the meaning of what is called 'letter'? He said: Son of lineage, the fourteen root letters of letters are called the meaning of letters. What is called 'letter' is nirvana, and because it is permanent, it is unpolluted. Whatever is unpolluted is imperishable. What is called 'imperishable' is the vajra body of the Thus-Gone One. Therefore, these fourteen root letters are the mothers of letters. Therein, what is called A (藏文:ཨ་,梵文天城體:अ,梵文羅馬擬音:a,漢語字面意思:阿) is indestructible. Whatever is indestructible is called the Three Jewels, like a vajra. Furthermore, what is called A (藏文:ཨ་,梵文天城體:अ,梵文羅馬擬音:a,漢語字面意思:阿) is unpolluted. Whatever is unpolluted is called the Thus-Gone One. The Thus-Gone One does not leak anything from the nine apertures, therefore it is called unpolluted. Because there are no nine apertures, it is unpolluted. What is unpolluted is permanent. What is permanent is the Thus-Gone One. The Thus-Gone One is unpolluted because it is unconditioned. Furthermore, what is called A (藏文:ཨ་,梵文天城體:अ,梵文羅馬擬音:a,漢語字面意思:阿) is called a collection of qualities. A collection of qualities is the Three Jewels, therefore it is called A (藏文:ཨ་,梵文天城體:अ,梵文羅馬擬音:a,漢語字面意思:阿). Therein, what is called A (藏文:ཨ་,梵文天城體:अ,梵文羅馬擬音:a,漢語字面意思:阿) is the meaning of what is called teacher. What is the meaning of what is called teacher? It is what is known in the world as noble. What is the meaning of what is called noble? Noble is unattached, having few desires, content, completely pure, and liberating sentient beings who wander in the three realms; this is called noble. Furthermore, what is called A (藏文:ཨ་,梵文天城體:अ,梵文羅馬擬音:a,漢語字面意思:阿) is discipline, especially guarding the precepts and following the conduct. Furthermore,

A means following the conduct of the noble ones, walking, dwelling, acting, moving, serving, offering, respecting, attending to, and prostrating to the Three Jewels and parents, learning these, and also learning the Mahayana. Sons of noble family, you and others who hold the precepts, Bodhisattvas, Mahasattvas, are called noble ones. Furthermore, Ā means to teach and tame, as the Tathagata said, 'These are the kinds of actions to be done, these are the kinds of people to act.' Not doing what is not Dharma is called noble, therefore it is called Ā. Then, I means the Buddha's Dharma, pure conduct, vast and clear like the full moon, without impurities. You and others are the kinds of actions to be done, these are the kinds of people to act. This is the meaning, this is not the meaning, this is what the Buddha said, this is what the Mara taught, thus it is explained, therefore it is called I. Then, Ī means the Buddha's Dharma is extremely profound and subtle, difficult to understand, like the great Lord of Gods or the great Brahma, wielding power through the Dharma. Whoever holds it in mind is called a Dharma protector. Furthermore, wielding power refers to the four protectors of the world, these four wielders of power are able to protect, uphold, extensively teach, and expound this Great Nirvana Sutra. Furthermore, Ī means the power to teach the Dharma to ordinary beings. Furthermore, Ī means it is spoken for the sake of being able to control. What is that? For example, diligently practicing the extremely vast Sutra Pitaka. Furthermore, Ī means like removing impure things, completely cutting off stinginess and jealousy, transforming everything into auspiciousness, therefore it is called Ī. Then, U means among all the Sutras, it is the most excellent, supreme, the Lama above all Lamas, the Great Nirvana. Furthermore, U means the Tathagatagarbha nature, which all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have never heard before, among all continents, the sound of Uttarakuru is unpleasant, it is the most supreme.
