If it is covered, it will not be seen. Therefore, I have said that sentient beings are without self. Whoever hears this Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra will see the Buddha-nature, like the tusk flower of the Kalāramba tree. Even if one hears all the samādhis from other sūtras, if one does not hear this sūtra, one will not see the noble essence of the Tathāgata, just as if there is no thunder, the tusk flower of the Kalāramba tree will not be seen. Hearing this sūtra, one will realize the essence of what all the Tathāgatas have contemplated and spoken. The so-called Buddha-nature is like the example of seeing the tusk flower of the Kalāramba tree when thunder sounds in the sky above. Hearing this sūtra, one will realize that all immeasurable sentient beings have Buddha-nature. Therefore, the Mahāparinirvāṇa is called the essence of what the Tathāgata has contemplated and spoken, and the Dharmakāya will arise, just as when thunder sounds, the tusk flower of the Kalāramba tree grows. Because such a great meaning arises and grows, it is called Mahāparinirvāṇa. Any son or daughter of good family who is very diligent in this Mahāparinirvāṇa is repaying the kindness of the Buddha and is called a true attendant of the Buddha. Then, Bodhisattva Light-Holder said to the Bhagavan: It is very wonderful! Bhagavan, the so-called Buddha-nature is very profound and very subtle, difficult to see and difficult to enter, and cannot be realized by Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The Bhagavan said: Son of good family, it is so, it is so, as you have said. Then, Bodhisattva Light-Holder again said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, how is the so-called Buddha-nature so profound, difficult to see, and difficult to enter? The Bhagavan said: Son of good family, it is like this: For example, a blind person went to a skilled doctor to cure his eyes. The doctor took a golden knife

If the eyes are covered by cataracts, and one finger is held up and shown to a blind person, the blind person will say that he cannot see it. If two or three fingers are held up, he will say that he can see a little. Son of good family, if this Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra is not spoken, then countless Bodhisattvas, from the perfection of pāramitā to the tenth bhūmi, even if they abide therein, will not see the Buddha-nature, just like this situation. After the Tathāgata speaks, they will see a little. Bodhisattvas, great beings, having seen in this way, will say this: 'It is very wonderful! World Honored One, we have been revolving in samsara for countless kalpas, and have been completely deceived by non-self.' Son of good family, even if a Bodhisattva abiding on the tenth bhūmi cannot clearly see the Buddha-nature, what need is there to mention that śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas cannot see it? Son of good family, furthermore, it is like this: for example, when a bird flies in the high sky above, it is difficult to discern which is the bird and which is the sky; only after careful examination does it become apparent. A Bodhisattva abiding on the tenth bhūmi understands only a small part of the Tathāgatagarbha, and what he sees is also similar to this situation; what need is there to mention the understanding and seeing of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas? Son of good family, for example, if a drunk person walks on the road, he cannot clearly see the road; similarly, a Bodhisattva abiding on the tenth bhūmi understands and sees only a small part of the Tathāgatagarbha. Son of good family, for example, if a person goes to a remote wilderness and is tormented by thirst, and in searching for water, sees a bird chirping on a tree, that person, tormented by thirst, cannot discern which is the tree and which is the water. Only after careful examination does he know that it is a bird and a tree. Son of good family, the way a Bodhisattva abiding on the tenth bhūmi sees and understands only a small part of the Tathāgatagarbha is also similar to this situation; it is not that he understands it clearly and easily. Son of good family, for example, if those who have entered the ocean see the mast of a large ship or a multi-storied building from a hundred yojanas, a thousand yojanas, or an immeasurable distance away, they will think:
