It has become like this. In the twenty-five existences, one experiences the ripening results. Because the mind is obscured by desire, hatred, and ignorance, one does not recognize the Buddha-nature, just as a poor person does not know that a precious jewel is buried in their flesh and thinks it is lost. Ordinary people are also like this. They do not know how to respect virtuous friends. Because they do not know the extremely secret essence of the Tathagata, they practice and strive for non-self. For example, non-noble ones speak of non-self, but they do not know the true characteristics of what is called "self." My attendants are also like this; they do not know how to respect virtuous friends, nor do they know how to practice non-self. They do not know the place of non-self. If they do not know the nature of non-self, what need is there to mention knowing the true nature of self? Son of good family, in this way, the Tathagata has declared that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature, just as a skilled doctor points out the vajra jewel to a poor person. Ordinary people are obscured and suppressed by countless afflictions, so they do not recognize the Buddha-nature. If afflictions are exhausted, then it will clearly manifest and be realized, just as a poor person sees a jewel in a clear mirror. Son of good family, the essence of the Tathagata is thus immeasurable and inconceivable. Son of good family, furthermore, for example, there is a medicine called "Sukha" on the snow mountain, which has a taste. Its taste is very sweet. Because it grows in dense forests, it cannot be seen. Just by smelling the fragrance, one knows that the medicine is in that place. In the past, there was a Chakravartin king who, desiring that medicine, erected wooden troughs in all places on the snow mountain to collect the dripping of the medicine. When that medicine ripened, it dripped onto the ground like water and also dripped into the wooden troughs, and that taste was authentic. After that king passed away, the taste of that medicine became sour in some places, salty in some places, sweet in some places, bitter in some places, spicy in some places, and astringent in some places. The taste is like that.

That single thing also, from where it drips, transforms into various different forms, the taste of that medicine is indeed in the mountains. For example, the waxing moon, those with little merit, even if they exert themselves to the utmost and carve with a chisel, cannot obtain it. If noble kings appear in the world, then by the cause of merit, they will also truly obtain the taste of that medicine. Son of good family, the taste of the Tathagatagarbha is also the same as that. Because it is obscured by the dense forest of all afflictions, ignorant beings cannot see it. The so-called single taste of medicine is an example of Buddha-nature. Because of the power of all afflictions, its taste transforms into various different forms, such as sentient beings in hell, hungry ghosts, animals, gods, humans, males, females, hermaphrodites, Kshatriyas, Brahmins, and low-caste Chandalas, and so on. Buddha-nature is very brave, therefore it cannot be killed. If it is killed, then it is as if Buddha-nature has been destroyed. Buddha-nature cannot be destroyed by its own nature, because there is no place to destroy it. The very nature of what is called self is the secret essence of the Tathagata. Thus, that secret essence cannot be destroyed or annihilated by anyone. Although it cannot be destroyed, it is not permissible to see it. If one manifestly awakens to unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then one will realize and know it, therefore it cannot be killed. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: If it cannot be killed, then does that mean that non-virtuous actions do not exist either? The Blessed One said to Light Protector: Truly, killing does exist. Why is that? Son of good family, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings dwells in the five aggregates. If the five aggregates are destroyed, then it is called killing. If one kills, then one will fall into the lower realms, and due to the causes and conditions of karma, one will be reborn as Kshatriyas, Brahmins, and so on, as well as low-caste Chandalas, males, females, hermaphrodites, the twenty-five existences, and so on, wandering in samsara with characteristics of various different forms.
