A woman had a gold mine in her house, but no one knew it. Later, a very skillful man said to the poor woman: "Daughter, can you be hired to wipe for me?" The woman said: "I cannot." "If you can point out the gold mine hidden by my son, you can work." The man said: "I am very skillful, I know and point out the gold mine hidden by your son." The woman said: "If all the people in my house, big and small, do not know, how can you know?" The man said: "I know without a doubt." The woman said: "I want to see it now, please point it out." Then the man entered her house, dug out the gold mine, and showed it to the woman. After the woman saw the mine, she was very happy, and a great sense of wonder arose, and she showed respect to the man. Son of the lineage, the Buddha-nature of all sentient beings is also similar to this, all sentient beings cannot see it, just as the poor woman cannot see the treasure mine. Son of the lineage, I say that all people have Buddha-nature, but it is obscured by universal afflictions, and cannot be seen, just as the poor woman cannot see the gold mine. Son of the lineage, the Tathagata also shows all sentient beings the treasure mine of complete enlightenment, which is the Buddha-nature. Individual ordinary people also see such things, and a great joy arises in their hearts, and they show respect and devotion to the Tathagata. The so-called skillful man is a metaphor for the Tathagata. The so-called poor woman is a metaphor for countless ordinary people. The so-called gold mine is a metaphor for Buddha-nature. Son of the lineage, here is another example: if a woman is raising a young child, if that child becomes ill, the woman will be very sad and will seek a doctor. Then the doctor gives her medicinal oil, milk, meat sugar, and...

Having mixed it into the food and fed it to the child, she admonished the woman, saying, 'Give this child medicine, and for a while, until the medicine has worn off, you must not give it milk.' Then, in order to prevent the woman from giving milk, she smeared bile on her breasts and said to the child, 'Her breasts are smeared with poison, you must not suck them.' That child, tormented by thirst, wanted to suckle, but as soon as he tasted the bitter flavor, he could not suckle. After the medicine had worn off, the woman washed her breasts clean and said, 'Child, come here, now you can suckle.' Even though that child was tormented by thirst, because he had tasted the bitter flavor before, he could not be persuaded to come even when called. Then, the mother admonished him again, saying, 'You took medicine before, and you must not be given milk until the medicine has worn off, so I smeared poison on it, but now your medicine has also worn off, and the bitter flavor has also been washed away, now there is no bitter flavor.' Only then did he slowly approach and was able to suckle. Son of good family, the Thus-Gone One is also like that, in order to liberate all sentient beings, he teaches all sentient beings to diligently practice the Dharma of selflessness. By diligently practicing that, the mind of self is eliminated, and one is completely liberated from suffering. Furthermore, in order to eliminate the evil view of the world being permanent or annihilated, in order to show the Dharma that transcends the world being permanent or annihilated, and also in order to show that the view of those who hold to the world being permanent or annihilated, clinging to self, is incorrect, by meditating on the Dharma of selflessness, one can transform into a completely pure body, just as that woman smeared bile on her breasts for the sake of her child, the Thus-Gone One is also like that, because he meditates on emptiness, he proclaimed that all Dharmas are without self. Just as that woman washed her breasts and called her child to suckle, my teaching of the Essence of the Thus-Gone One is also like that, Bhikshu, do not be afraid, just as the mother calls her child to slowly suckle, Bhikshu, you must also discern. The Essence of the Thus-Gone One is not something to be eliminated. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Blessed One, 'Blessed One, in reality, there is no such thing as self. Why is that? Because'
