O, Giver! Son of lineage, the so-called four perverted views are as follows: To generate the perception of suffering in what is not suffering is called a perverted view. The absence of suffering is called the Tathagata. To generate the perception of suffering is to think of the Tathagata as impermanent, changing, and transforming. To say that the Tathagata is impermanent is a great suffering of transgression. To say that the Tathagata has abandoned the body of suffering and entered into Nirvana like a fire extinguished when the wood is consumed, is to generate the perception of suffering in what is not suffering, which is called a perverted view. If I were to say that the Tathagata is permanent, that would be a view of self. If one clings to a view of self, it would become immeasurable transgression. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that the Tathagata is impermanent. If someone says that the so-called self experiences happiness, and if one says that the Tathagata is impermanent, that is suffering. If it is suffering, why would it become happiness? To perceive happiness in suffering is a perversion. To perceive suffering in happiness is also a perversion. Happiness is the Tathagata. Suffering is saying that the Tathagata is impermanent. If one says that the Tathagata is impermanent, that is called perceiving suffering in happiness. To say that the Tathagata is permanent is happiness. If, as I have said, the Tathagata is permanent, why would he enter Nirvana? If the Tathagata is not suffering, why would he abandon his body and enter Nirvana? Thus, to perceive suffering in happiness is called one perverted view. To perceive permanence in impermanence and to perceive impermanence in permanence are also called perverted views. Impermanence is not meditating on emptiness. Not meditating on emptiness will lead to a short life. To say that someone who has not meditated on the peace of emptiness will have a long life is a perverted view, which is the second perverted view. To perceive self in what is without self, and to perceive no-self in self, is also a perverted view. Worldly people also say that there is a self, the Buddha

It is also said that the Dharma of the earth has self. Worldly people say there is self, but because there is no Buddha-nature, it is thinking of self in non-self, which is called inversion. The self of the Buddha's Dharma is the Buddha-nature. Worldly people say that the Buddha's Dharma is without self, therefore, it is called thinking of non-self in self. If it is said that the Buddha's Dharma is definitely without self, then the Tathagata's saying to the attendants to meditate on non-self would also become an inversion, which is three inversions. To think of impurity in purity, and to think of purity in impurity, is also inversion. Purity is not the Tathagata's constant abiding, the body mixed with food, not the body of afflictions, not the body of flesh and blood, not the body composed of veins, water, and bones. Regarding this, if someone says that the Tathagata is impermanent, is the body mixed with food, is the body composed of veins, water, and bones, and that the Dharma, Sangha, and liberation will also cease and be extinguished. If it is said like this, it is called inversion. To think of purity in impurity is when someone says that there is not even a single impurity in my body, and because there is no impurity, it will not be eaten by ghosts and will reach a completely pure state, and the Tathagata's saying to diligently meditate on impurity is also a lie. If it is said like this, it is called inversion, which is called four inversions. Bodhisattva Light Protector also said to the Blessed One, we used to have wrong views, and now we have become right views. Blessed One, in the twenty-five existences, is there something called self? The Blessed One said: Son of the lineage, what is called self is the meaning of the Tathagatagarbha. All sentient beings have Buddha-nature, which is the meaning of what is called self. Thus, the meaning of what is called self has been obscured by immeasurable defilements from beginningless time, therefore sentient beings have not seen it. Son of the lineage, for example, a poor woman
