When a small child is first born, it cannot distinguish anything, it knows nothing. If there were such a thing as "I," then it should be able to distinguish everything and know everything immediately after birth. Therefore, it is clear that there is definitely no such thing as "I." If there were definitely such a thing as "I," then it should not be the case that one takes a birth and then ultimately disappears. If all beings possess Buddha-nature and it is permanent, then there should be no destruction either. If there is no characteristic of destruction, then why are there different kinds of people such as kings, Brahmins, outcasts, Chandalas, and animals? The ripening of karma is diverse, and the causes are also different. If there were definitely such a thing as "I," then there should be no good or bad among all sentient beings. Therefore, it is clear that what is called Buddha-nature is not a permanent dharma. If Buddha-nature were definitely permanent, then why are killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, desire, hatred, and wrong views, etc., taught and spoken about? If the nature of "I" were permanent, then why does one become intoxicated and lose memory from drinking alcohol? If the nature of "I" were permanent, then the blind would also see forms, the deaf would also hear sounds, the mute would also be able to speak, and the lame would also be able to walk. If the nature of "I" were permanent, then one should not escape from water, fire, cliffs, poison, weapons, and ferocious wild animals. If "I" were permanent, then one should not forget what one knew before. If one does not forget later, then why would one say things like, "I have never seen this person before"? If "I" were permanent, then one should not forget youth and vigor, aging and decay, etc., and everything one has done before, but should remember it. If "I" were permanent, then where does it reside? Does it reside in phlegm and mucus? Or does it reside in colors such as blue, yellow, and red? If "I"...

That which is called permanent is like anointing the body with sesame oil, it is the nature of pervading everything. If the body is cut, then I too will be destroyed. The Blessed One said to Light Protector: Son of good family, for example, a king has a strong man who suddenly has a vajra jewel. When the strong man competes with another, the opponent's head touches him, and the jewel sinks into the flesh, but he does not know where the jewel has gone. Because of the wound, he calls a doctor, and the very skilled doctor says that because the jewel has entered the flesh, the wound cannot be treated. He says, 'Hey, strong man, where is your jewel?' The strong man is frightened and says to the doctor, 'My jewel has not gone anywhere. If it is not there, is this not an illusion?' Thinking this, he is very sad. Then the doctor cheers him up and says, 'Do not be so sad. When you competed, the jewel sank into the flesh, and only an image appeared outside. When you competed, you generated anger. Because of the power of the jewel, you did not notice that it had sunk into the flesh.' Even though he said this, he did not believe it and said, 'Doctor, you are lying. If it sank into the flesh, the pus and blood are very dirty, so it should come out. If it went into the water, you should also be able to see it.' Then the doctor used a mirror, and the jewel was clearly visible in the mirror. When the strong man saw this, he had a wonderful and rare thought. Son of good family, all sentient beings are the same. Because they do not attend to and serve a virtuous friend, they cannot see the Buddha-nature even though it is there. Obscured and suppressed by desire, hatred, and ignorance, sentient beings fall into various kinds of rebirths in hell, as animals, hungry ghosts, asuras, outcastes, low castes, royal castes, Brahmin castes, and so on. Because various kinds of karma are generated in the mind, even if they obtain a human body, they become deaf, blind, mute, lame, and so on.
