Venerable One, if a king were to ask, 'How do monks fall away from the human dharma?' how should one answer this? The Blessed One said to Light Protector: 'Any monk who lives by deceit and trickery for the sake of gain and alms, thinking, 'The world will know me as a monk.' Thinking about how to gain more profit and fame, foolish and ignorant monks think day and night: 'Even if I have not attained the fruit of a contemplative, the world will think that I have attained the fruit of a contemplative. Laymen and laywomen, and all others, will say that I am a noble and blessed one.' They think this for the sake of gain and fame, not for the sake of desiring the Dharma. They adorn their conduct, wear robes, carry bowls, their behavior does not fall, and they live in the wilderness, pretending to be Arhats. In order for the people of the world to praise, 'This monk is supreme and excellent, diligent in asceticism and the Dharma of perfect peace.' Because of this cause and this condition, I will have many disciples and followers. Everyone will offer me robes, alms, bedding, and medicine for sickness, and many women will attend to me with reverence and respect.' If a monk or nun thinks in this way, that is called falling away from the human dharma. If monks dwell in the wilderness for the sake of distinguishing the unsurpassed and sacred Dharma, even if they are not Arhats, but others think they are Arhats, then that monk is a very virtuous monk, a peaceful monk, a good monk. Innumerable beings will generate faith. Because of this cause and this condition, countless monks will become his retinue, and monks and laypeople who have broken their vows will also abide in the precepts. Because of this cause and this condition, the sacred Dharma will abide for a long time, and the unsurpassed teachings of the Tathagata will flourish, and the immeasurable beings will be saved by the greatly flourishing Mahayana Dharma.

And, one will become extremely proficient in the profound and shallow meanings of the Sutras and Vinaya spoken by the Tathagata. Therefore, saying like this, "I have the Buddha-nature"; in the Sutra of the Tathagatagarbha, it also says, "I will definitely attain complete enlightenment, and immeasurable afflictions will also be exhausted." To the one who speaks like this, and also to the immeasurable lay practitioners, saying like this, "You also have the Buddha-nature; if we abide in the Bodhi-ground of the Tathagata, we will definitely attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and immeasurable afflictions will also be pacified." Even if saying like this, that person is not a human Dharma speaker of the Lama, but is called a Bodhisattva. Therefore, even because of a minor transgression, one will fall into hell and experience suffering for eight thousand years counted in days, months, and years of the thirty-three heavens, let alone intentionally committing a serious sin? In the Mahayana Sutra, it is said that if a Bhikshu commits a serious offense, he should not be approached. So, what constitutes a serious offense according to the Mahayana Sutra? If a householder builds a Buddhist temple and offers flower garlands to the Buddha, if a Bhikshu takes the thread that strung the flower garland without permission, that is a serious offense. Whether knowing or not knowing, it is a serious offense. If one destroys a Buddhist stupa with a mind of desire, it is also a serious offense, and that person should not be approached. If a king or minister sees a damaged stupa and repairs it to venerate the relics or to restore the damaged parts, and finds jewels inside the stupa and gives them to a Bhikshu, but the Bhikshu takes possession of them and uses them as his own, then that Bhikshu is tainted. He is the root of disputes and quarrels, and lay practitioners should not serve, offer to, or respect him. That Bhikshu is also called impotent, also called a hermaphrodite, also called a eunuch. Called a eunuch, because he is attached to women.

If one transforms into a woman, one becomes a woman; if one is attached to a man, one becomes a man. That bhikshu is called a person with impaired faculties, and is neither called a man nor a woman, neither called a renunciate nor a householder. One should not offer reverence, offerings, or service to that bhikshu. In the Buddha's teachings, the practice of a renunciate is to be a protector and refuge for sentient beings with a compassionate heart, and to give fearlessness even to the smallest ant; this is called the practice of a renunciate. Not drinking intoxicating semen-wine, and completely abandoning even the smell of unpleasant odors, is called the practice of a renunciate. Not speaking falsely, and not even thinking of speaking falsely even in a dream, is called the practice of a renunciate. Not having desire, even in a dream, is called the practice of a renunciate. Then, the Bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Bhagavan: If a bhikshu engages in impure conduct in a dream, will he lose his vows? The Bhagavan replied: It is not so. One should think of impure conduct as extremely filthy, and not generate a pure thought even for a moment. If a woman abandons thoughts of various defilements, and dreams of engaging in impure conduct, she should generate a great sense of regret immediately upon waking. When a bhikshu goes for alms and encounters a famine, if he finds a piece of meat, he should generate the thought of eating the flesh of his own son. If a thought of desire arises, he should immediately abandon it completely. These categories of Dharma should be understood as the Sutras and Vinaya spoken by the Buddha's teachings. Among them, whoever follows the teachings of the Mara belongs to the retinue of Mara. Whoever follows the teachings of the Buddha is called a Bodhisattva. Among them, those who always stand on one foot, remain silent and do not speak, jump into water, jump into fire, jump onto rocks, do not fear terrible things, drink poison, do not eat food, sleep in ash pits, bind their own hands and feet, and kill sentient beings, etc.
