If he says "yes," then that is a defeat. Why is that? If someone has not actually attained anything, but pretends and deceives, then that person is said to have fallen from the Dharma of humans, and is defeated. For example, if a monk is content with little desire, keeps the precepts, is completely pure, and lives in a remote place, and a king or great minister comes and thinks that this monk will become an Arhat, so he approaches him and praises, respects, and prostrates, saying: "Great teacher, immediately after this body you will attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment." If he says this, then that monk says to the king: "Great king, I have not actually attained the fruit of a renunciate, so please do not say that I have attained the fruit of a renunciate. Great king, please do not preach to me the Dharma of discontentment. Those who are discontent, even if they praise you up to 'You will manifest enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment,' do not answer and say nothing. If I do not answer and say nothing, then I will be reproached by the Buddha, the Blessed One. All Buddhas praise and commend those who practice contentment. Therefore, I am always happy to practice contentment. Contentment is when the king says that I have attained the fruit even though I have not attained the fruit, but I do not desire it, that is called contentment." At that time, the king also says: "Great teacher, you have indeed attained the fruit of an Arhat, and are no different from the Buddha." At that time, the king proclaims to all the people of the country, the consorts, and all the attendants of the palace, that this monk has attained the fruit of a renunciate. All who hear this develop great faith in the monk, and a desire to make offerings, respect, and serve him. Thus, because that monk truly practices celibacy and is completely pure, all the joy in him obtains great merit because of that cause and condition, but that monk is not in a state of defeat.

This is not a defeat. Why is that? Because others have generated a mind of joy, faith, praise, and offering. In this way, that bhikshu has no defeat. If someone says that he has a defeat, then that sutra should be known to be taught by Mara. Furthermore, monks, in the profound sutras spoken by the Buddha after careful consideration, it is said that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha (སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་རང་བཞིན།,梵文:tathāgatagarbha,梵文罗马转写:tathāgatagarbha,Essence of the Tathagata), and because they have the Tathagatagarbha, they can cut off immeasurable afflictions and manifest complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, except for those with wrong views. If a king or a great minister asks, 'Bhikshu, will you manifest enlightenment or not? Do you have the Tathagatagarbha?' Then, you should answer like this: 'My body certainly has the Tathagatagarbha, but whether I will become a Buddha or not is uncertain.' The king said, 'Venerable one, if you do not commit the deeds of wrong views, you will surely become a Buddha without doubt.' The bhikshu should answer as the great king said. Like this, even if the bhikshu says, 'I certainly have the Tathagatagarbha,' he will not fall into defeat because of it. Furthermore, monks, at the time of ordination, if you think like this: 'I will ultimately manifest complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.' Even if that person does not attain unsurpassed enlightenment, he will obtain immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable merit. If someone says that he will fall into defeat because of this, then wouldn't all bhikshus fall into defeat? Why is that? Because in the past, for eighty kotis of kalpas, I abandoned all unexamined things, possessed the conduct of few desires and contentment, diligently applied myself to the unsurpassed Dharma treasury of the Tathagata, and knew that my body certainly had the Tathagatagarbha, therefore I manifested complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and became known as the Buddha, endowed with great compassion.' Whoever says like this

The spoken Sutra Pitaka and Vinaya Pitaka are called the teachings of the Buddha. Those who do not follow these teachings are said to belong to the retinue of Mara. Those who follow these teachings are called Bodhisattvas. Furthermore, like this, there are no four parajikas, no thirteen sanghavasesas of the Sangha, no two aniyatas, no thirty nissaggiya pacittiyas, no ninety-one pacittiyas, no four patidesaniyas, many sikkhapadas, and no seven adhikaranasamathas, etc. There are no sthulatyayas and five heinous crimes, etc., and no such thing as wrong views. If monks fall into hell for violating those things, then all the tirthikas should be born as gods in the heavens. Why is that? Because the tirthikas, etc., do not have violations called precepts. Therefore, the Tathagata spoke of what is called precepts in order to tame beings. The Buddha said, "My monks, if you want to engage in impure conduct, put down your Dharma robes, put on the clothes of a householder, and engage in impure conduct." Furthermore, thinking like this, "Engaging in impure conduct is not just our fault, when the Tathagata was alive, there were also monks who engaged in impure conduct, and there was also liberation. There was also the birth as gods in the heavens after death, it is not just me who is doing it. Some have violated the four parajikas, some have violated the five precepts, and some have done all kinds of unexamined, improper actions, but there is also perfect liberation." The Tathagata said, "If one commits a single offense, beings will fall into hell for eight thousand years counted in years in the Trayastrimsa heaven, the sun and the moon." But was that also just said by the Tathagata in order to tame beings? There is no difference in weight between parajikas and offenses, are the Vinaya holders falsely saying that this was established by the Buddha? If one says that, that is not the teaching of the Buddha, one should know that saying that is the Sutra Pitaka and Vinaya Pitaka of Mara. Then, whoever abides in the precepts like this
