Furthermore, one should abide by the Vinaya, Abhidhamma, and Sutras if they do not contradict these four. Among them, regarding what is timely and untimely, what protects the Dharma and what does not, and what lacks combination, these things that the Tathagata has not examined, all monks are allowed to use. If someone says this, one should not abide by that statement. If the Vinaya, Abhidhamma, or Sutras say that it is in accordance with this, one should not abide by the three pitakas either. I have spoken of these four abidings for those with eyes of flesh, not for those with eyes of wisdom. Therefore, I have spoken of these four abidings. Dharma is the nature of all dharmas. Meaning is that the Tathagata is permanent and unchanging. Wisdom is knowing that all sentient beings have the nature of the Buddha. Definitive meaning is understanding all the Mahayana Sutras. Then, Bodhisattva Light Protector again said to the Bhagavan: World Honored One, should we not abide by the four types of people you spoke of earlier? The World Honored One said: Yes, it is so. Yes, it is so. Son of good family, as the World Honored One has said, one should not abide by this. Why is that? Because there are four maras. Which four? Holding the Sutras and Vinaya taught by the maras. If ordinary people also follow the maras and also enter what is taught by the Buddha, how should we discern them? If it is said so in the Sutras and Vinaya, it should be known that it is the teaching of the demon. Son of good family, if it is said in the Sutras or Vinaya that the Tathagata has been enlightened for a long time, and that the manifestation of enlightenment is for the sake of liberating sentient beings, and that he appears to follow the world, born from the union of his parents. If it is said so in the Sutras and Vinaya, it should be known that it is the true Tathagata. Among them, those who follow the teachings of the demon belong to the retinue of the demon. Among them, those who follow the Sutras and Vinaya taught by the Buddha should be known as Bodhisattvas. Among them, if one does not believe that the Tathagata took seven steps in each of the ten directions when he was first born, then he has joined the teachings of the demon. Among them, if it is said that when the Buddha Bhagavan went to the deity's statue, all the gods, such as the Great Lord, the Great Brahma, and Indra, the lord of the gods, folded their palms and bowed at the feet of the Buddha with respect. If it is recorded in the Sutra and Vinaya, then that is what the Buddha taught. Among them, following what is taught by the demon is called belonging to the category of demons. Among them, following what is taught by the Buddha is called a Bodhisattva. In the Sutra and Vinaya, when the Bodhisattva serves as the crown prince, he seeks consorts from the four directions with a mind of desire, and enjoys the five pleasures in the palace. Among them, if the Bodhisattva has long since completely abandoned the mind of desire and the desires of the retinue of consorts, and even abandons the five pleasures of the thirty-three gods like spitting out saliva, what need is there to mention human desires? He shaves his hair and beard, and goes forth from home to homelessness, diligently striving for Bodhi. If it is recorded in the Sutra and Vinaya, then that is what the Buddha taught. Among them, following the Sutra and Vinaya taught by the demon is called belonging to the category of demons. Among them, following the Sutra and Vinaya taught by the Buddha is a Bodhisattva.
